See Ragnar Lothbrok. See him brought low. King Ragnar is sick. He coughs gore. His urine stinks of blood. All the ambition of the gods—and yet, he is still a man.

And so the warriors prepare for battle. The allied forces of King Ragnar Lothbrok and Earl Kalf the Usurper and Horik’s Annoying Son are set to attack Paris, from land and from sea.

|
Paris rises from the water, tall and proud and unconquered. Down the river sail the men of the north, unshaven and ungodly and conquering. “Count Odo,” asks the King, “How have they been allowed to reach us?” Count Odo warned their allies.

“The things I do for you,” says the live man to the dead one. They are always talking to each other, these two. They have so much to say. We begin with them in the dirty sand along the fjord.

Ragnar Lothbrok arrives back in Kattegat, ready to leave. The young King is restless. His adventures in England have been prosperous. He has made new allies: Ecbert of Wessex, Kwenthrith of Mercia. Their alliance was sealed with blood and earth.

Little Ivar the Boneless is crying. His shrieks of unfathomable pain haunt wintry Kattegat. No wonder half the city took off for England:Better to die in battle than try to sleep through the screams of that little child.

|
Harbard the Wanderer walks into Kattegat, one hand bleeding. “I was sleeping rough,” he tells the welcoming party: Aslaug, Siggy, and Helga.

One of the themes this week on Vikings Season 3 Episode 2 was dreams and they were disturbing.

|
Waves of blood crash upon these Mercian shores. Ragnar Lothbrok and his men have traveled a great distance—farther than their fathers または their fathers’ fathers.
