1 week later, my parents, Jake and I went over to Charlie’s. He insisted I call him that, rather than Grandpa, because we were close enough in age for him to be my father.
When we rang the doorbell Sue answered. They had been married for about a year. Seth was there too.

Then he looked at me.
“Wow, Nessie, you’re . . . older, again.”
“Yup,” I responded, “Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve seen you. I’ve been pretty busy.”

He did what he was told and removed his hands from me instantly. He stood up and started backing away hands up, cautiously in front of him. I looked at my father to see he was smiling smugly. I couldn’t stand having Jacob three feet in front of me without me being with him.

When we were done explaining, all Charlie could think to say was, “Of course it would have to be my granddaughter,” Then a new thought occurred to him. “What, what about when she was a baby?”
