What is the factor that makes あなた afraid of something?

I just cant seem to understand this. We are afraid of some things, that others aren't. Why is this so? Why must we be afraid of this when others arent? Are we actually afraid of heights, または just scared of falling? Are we afraid of the dark, または what's in the dark? I dont get it!

Well sometimes it depends on that specific person's past. Like if something traumatic happened to them they will naturally develop a fear of whatever traumatized them.

Like for me, my brother when i was little would always scare me in the dark so now I'm nyctophobic... -_-
