She was such a friend-user and a bitch, yet everyone just adored her and welcomed her when she needed friends! If my friend only talked to me when her boyfriend wasn't there, I wouldn't consider her a friend.
Everyone wanted to hang out with her in the first book because she was a new and Forks very rarely got new students. As the series continued, I noticed that she was using them for lunch buddies whenever Edward was gone. I could sense them being drawn away by Bella more and more because of that (which was why Jessica was able to stop being friends with Bella without feeling any remorse). But who could blame them? The lunch situation was very rude of Bella. Did she have to sit with her boyfriend everyday? She couldn't sit with her human friends once? Only when Edward was gone? That's so fake to me. I would have called her out on that.
On top of that, being popular means that you have a very wide group of friends. Bella only hung out with that group of people and the Cullens. So yes she had somewhat friends (in that group her only friends were Mike and Angela) but that doesn't make her popular or anywhere close...
