Hmm. Mulan ( my favorite) has no traits that she shares with Elsa ( my least favorite). Mulan is smart, brave, clever, and uses her head. Elsa is dumb, frightened, and easily angered; Elsa has to rely on her sister, Anna, to find out what to do to save herself and her kingdom. Ariel has more in common with Mulan ( in my view) since both of them try to fight for their dreams--- instead of running away and hoping someone else will provide them with the answers they seek.
^Hhm, was that a comment for me? If so, it doesn't change my opinion about it, though I know that's not what you were trying to do. Mulan leaves so she can she can save her father, not so she can "follow her dreams" as you put it. Mulan's whole purpose in her movie was to be selfless and save her father, Ariel's whole purpose in the movie was to get what she wants and leave her family miserable and not care about them. Mulan, when she was about to get killed by Shang, never once whined and accepted once she put her self into, when Ariel's bratty ways got her captured my Ursula she cried her head of about it and waited for her father to fix her mess, thinking she was to good to get the punishment that she signed onto. I see a lot more things Elsa and Mulan have in common that Ariel and Mulan. Both Mulan and Elsa try to be who their not in the beginning of the movie to make their family and country happy. I bet Mulan will have a much better respect for Elsa than Ariel any day, at least Mulan will be able to tolerate Elsa the way I see it.
For the people above, Mulan and Ariel are both really brave in my opinion. Both in my top 5 bravest princesses. (I haven't actually made a list though.) And Sk8ter__grl, what do you mean "too good for punishment"? Do you have evidence that Ariel thinks that? She didn't want her dad to get turned into the worm thing instead of her, and once he did she attacked Ursula. I'm definitely not trying to change your opinion, but I think Ariel and Mulan have a ton more in common than so many others. And by the way, "cried her head off"? She sniffled and let out a few tears for a minute, but she got over that really fast when she realized she had to take action herself (jumping into the water to chase after the boat). Mulan never gives up and neither does Ariel.
^^^ Fine. I'll bite. Mulan has a dream of being "accepted" by the society she lives in. Half of why she does go to war is for her father's sake, the other half is a journey of self-discovery and a chance to meet her own high expectations of "bringing honor to her family" one day. Yes. It IS A DREAM. It's Mulan's dream. So, now, we even differ about Mulan....
As for Ariel, you are not counting at all the fact that Ariel does not wait around after Ursula turns her father into a polyp. Ursula tricks both daughter and father. Ariel goes right after Ursula for having manipulated her!
Elsa claims to know more about romantic love than Anna--- but she doesn't. Elsa runs away from her throne at a critical period, when Arendelle desperately needs another ruler! ( It's been without one for years, since both parents died, and I think that is implied in the movie). So Elsa has powers no one understands, but Elsa does not ever quit making her fears larger than they really need to be. Elsa blows her fears out of proportion. She clings tighter to her own fears than she does to her sister. And she refuses her sister's help. Even after Anna ventured out in a freaking snowstorm to find her--- Elsa freezes her sister's heart and tosses her out on her bottom. The snow-monster was overkill. Just my opinion.
Ariel doesn't ever cause any of her sisters any harm. As for her father, Triton decided to apply his own signature to the scroll--- and Ariel had no say when he did that. That was her father's choice. If you should be angry, you should be angry at the skillful manipulation of Ursula. That villain played hard ball.
Sk8er__grl* is the username, BTW. And I know you love the little fishy, but you don't have to ask me every time why I say what I do about her.
Ariel thought she was "Too good for punishment" when she said, "I didn't mean to! I didn't know!" Wait, what? She signed the fricken contract! Ursula for the love of god TOLD HER that if she doesn't get a guy who didn't even know her and could have just as well been as evil as Hans to fall in love with her that she would become her slave, and she was to late. So what does Ariel mean by she didn't know? She didn't know that she would have to face the consequences. She whines about it to daddy unlike Mulan who took the consequences lying down. When she attacked Ursula, it was just to shift the blame to Ursula. She calls Ursula, "A monster" when Ariel's mess-up was the thing that turned her father into the ployp. Ariel just can't admit once in her movie when she is wrong, while her father can. Ariel cries more than any other princess from my recollection. Mulan only cries when she thinks her father will die, and gets over it. Ariel cries more than Cinderella who was being abused! Ariel acts like a baby the whole movie and never matures while Mulan does, Mulan would probably find Ariel as insufferable as I do for not caring about her family which is the most important thing to her. They are nothing alike.
You and I are complete opposites, Sk8r_grl. We will never see eye to eye. I respect your opinion, but I do not believe as you do. Your insistence that Ariel is evil is just...not in the movie at all. But fine. You have managed to further convince me that Elsa will always be last. Elsa is a coward, where Mulan isn't. Elsa constantly pushes her sister away until she bitterly needs her help, whereas Ariel does not push anyone away, nor refuse anyone's help. To that, I say--- I should like Elsa? Hardly.
Alas, we aren't complete opposites, we both love Mulan, but I agree we will never see eye to eye. And frankly, I don't care what your list looks like, put it however you want, put Ariel first and Mulan last for all I care, I respect your opinion, but your refusal to ever listen to anyone's opinions and to throw a tantrum every time someone insults your favorite character is annoying, and your constant "wishing" that people will stop hating her is ridiculous. I don't think she is evil and I don't ridicule her nearly as much as you ridicule Elsa, and me saying she was evil there? Do you read everything to your own devices? And my last comment wasn't directed at you, I wrote it before I saw your comment. Ariel doesn't refuse people's help, but she expects everyone to do everything for her. Since I came to this club I thought I was warming up to Ariel, but your rudeness has convinced me otherwise. I don't care if you have Elsa last, Your list is the cliche' of lists on this club, most popular top 3, same person at the bottom spot. Your comment was attacking me, not the other way around, yet you want me to feel some sort of sympathy for you? Seriously.
Ariel never whined. Honestly I watched that movie so many times, and she never whined. She never whined to herself, Flounder, her dad, or anyone. What did she say to her dad that was whining? Because I know she didn't whine to her dad for sure. Maybe you could call something she said to herself "whining,'" but it's nowhere near whining in my opinion. It's not that Ariel never admits she was wrong, it's that she never says the words "I was wrong." I think she realized her mistake when she was crying on the dock. But you can't know that for sure because she couldn't talk. She didn't shift blame to Ursula. Calling her a monster for turning merpeople into worms isn't blaming in my opinion. She said she didn't know because... well, she didn't know! Ursula sang a song that twisted the whole thing to make it seem like she was a good guy who made a couple little mistakes, "I've had the odd complaint, but on the whole I've been a saint." Ariel has a good reason to cry every time she does. And mostly she cries, it's because she's sad, not because she's whining. She did get upset when her dad yelled at her and there were tears in her eyes at the end of the movie. But the other times was because of sadness. And I won't dislike a character because they're emotional.
I very much respect your opinion, but I just don't agree with 95% of the stuff you say about Ariel. And I ask you questions about the little fishy because although I understand some of it, a lot of what you're saying makes no sense to me.
I know, my opinions about her are very controversial, I don't think I'll ever find someone to back me up here.
Most of the things your doing is assuming about her character, which is why I think she was so poorly put together. She saw the polyps there when she came in, and she couldn't have honestly thought that the song Ursula sung with such a deep-menacing tune was a song good guys sing.
But I respect your opinion because your one of the sweetest fans of her I know, so I won't counter most of what you said because this could honestly go on forever and were spamming this thing, I'll message you instead if I get the chance. ^_^
That's the thing about Disney movies, the audience can hear the menacing music, but the characters don't get it. Yeah we should probably stop spamming lol, so this will be my last comment. But I also think that a lot of what you're saying it assuming also. I know I'm assuming, but it's hard to not do that with a character like Ariel. So I agree with you there. Wait lol, I don't know what polyps are. Are those the wormy things? Because if they are, I don't think Ariel would have any way of knowing those used to be merpeople. The first time I saw the movie, I thought they were just creepy plants.
@Sk8r_grl: Please stop slandering me. It's not nice. This whole thing began when you took offense to my opinion ( which differs from yours). I will just say that calling me rude, accusing me of wanting sympathy and throwing tantrums ( which I never did), and telling me that my own list is cliche--- are all your opinions and assumptions. They sting, but again, it's your personal opinion about me.
You have the right to hate Ariel. I have a right to voice an opinion about why I think Ariel is similar to Mulan. I didn't do anything to you. You asked if my original comment was meant for you. It wasn't. It was my own opinion. Nothing more.
@iwasneverhere I respect your opinion, it's when you say stuff like, 'You want me to like Elsa?" that I take offense to, because I never told you you have to like her. Your comment about Ariel being like Mulan was right after mine which of course would make me think it was suppose to counter what I said, so I stood by my opinions. Your message after mine was insulting, you took it from me voicing my opinion to acting like I'm trying to brainwash you with what I say. And you saying that I think Ariel is evil?I think she's a brat, no doubt, but you were twisting my words into your own conclusion. Of course what I'm saying is my opinion, I never start of my sentences saying that my comment is a fact.
Disnerdtobe, why you pick yes if you think Ariel and Elsa are similar, I mean this question ask if your favorite and least favorite are quite different. Plus so far I see your least favorite is Tiana not Ariel.
Rapunzel and Tiana? They're almost oppose each other.
Mulan and Ariel are closer in personality ( generally impulsive, rebellious, quick-thinking). They are my favorites, and I think they have many of the same traits and are quite similar in personality. Belle, Tiana, and Elsa ( my least favorites) all resemble each other, too ( reserved, very slow to act on anything except what they naturally care most about, and are know-it-alls around every other character in their own movies).
@ Disnerdtobe and Sparklefairy: Again, I have analyzed and re-analyzed this for years...and I don't really see too many similarities between Elsa, Ariel, and Mulan. Two are brave, while one isn't. Mulan and Ariel are quick to take "the heat" for having a different viewpoint from everyone around them. Elsa is scared of being different, and Ariel and Mulan aren't. Mulan and Ariel care about other characters despite not seeing eye to eye, and they aren't afraid of the repercussions of being persecuted. Elsa is definitely afraid of being persecuted. If you're going to do similarities, I've checked the movies, and Anna has more in common with Ariel and Mulan.
