Before the whole "you should fall in love and marry for the other person's personality, not just looks" became a THING (as in, people would not stop talking about it as they do today), she was the very first princess/heroine that made me stop and think, "Wait, is beauty really enough to be in love?"
Before then, when I was a really really little kid, I really did buy into Disney's (then) standard courtship of "She's beautiful / He's handsome and romantic, I'm in love!" (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, etc.) When Odette said "Wait," I was right there with Derek thinking "What? You two are perfect for each other! You're beautiful!" I too was taken aback and actually had to stop and think when she said "Thank you, but what else?"
I think this movie's way of handling it is WAY better than any Dreamworks or post-Shrek Disney film, which just beats you over the head with "love at first sight due to beauty is bad!" rather than trusting children to think about it and come up with the answer for themselves.
This needs to be updated; Anastasia, and Thumbelina are
both owned by Disney, and Odette is half-owned by Disney
Nest Entertainment is a subsidiary of Searchlight Pictures,
and back before Disney bought 20th Century Studios
and all of it's assets and subsidiaries. Now that
Disney owns 20th Century Studios and all of its
assets and subsidiaries, Odette is
½ Disney owned and ½ Sony owned!
