They can´t do anything about their feelings and if Elena feel like that she shouldn´t leave Stefan but in the same time she can´t fight her feelings anymore and kisses Damon. Stefan looks at Elena like any normal guy who loves their gf would. However Damon looks at her like she's something soo precious and she too good for this earth (1x19, 2x01,2x04 etc)

I've also noticed when Damon looks at Katherine, his eyes are searching...searching for something he can't find.
