THRUSHKIT AND REDKIT WERE BROUGHT TO the world early that leaf-fall. Lilykit stayed in the nursery at the time with her mother, while Mousekit was outside with his father. Heatherstripe 発言しました that the birthing was painful, but in this current moment, she was still gazing down at her newborns as they suckled.
Stonepaw had just arrived with the wet moss; he was sent to fetch it during the kitting.
“I missed it,” he sighed to Heatherstripe when he walked in. “I’m so sorry.”
Heatherstripe looked at him warmly. “It’s all right, Stonepaw. あなた still have many もっと見る moons to cherish the moments with them.”
The black tom purred, nuzzling the kits. “You did a wonderful job, あなた know,” he murmured to Heatherstripe.
Lilykit went over によって the other queen’s nest, looking at her kits. The little ginger she-kit was called Redkit, and the brown tabby tom was Thrushkit. Their eyes and ears were sealed shut, and they were so tiny.
“Be careful, Lilykit,” she heard her mother warn. “They’re too young to play.”
“I know,” Lilykit mewed, still looking at the kits.
Heatherstripe and Stonepaw stared proudly at each other, then looking down at their children again.
This whole thing was mushy and yet romantic at the same time. But, she overheard her mother say that Stonepaw’s warrior ceremony would be postponed.
Every once in a while there would be a warrior that would drop によって to congratulate Heatherstripe for the kits. The new lives were certainly welcomed in the Clan, like Sweetstar had said.
“Why don’t あなた go in the clearing with Mousekit,” Sweetstar mewed.
Lilykit nodded. She might as well get away from all of the coming ネコ that would only just stare in great awe and wasting precious time.
Time.
The word just made her shudder, and she didn’t know why. It kind of scared the little she-kit.
Lilykit ran from the nursery to find her brother. But, as she was aimlessly hastening, she ran into someone. The impact from the cat’s muscles made her stagger backward. A red-brown tom stared back at her, his blue eyes giving her a questioning yet awkward glance. It wasn’t like he was saying anything; he was just staring at her. It kind of scared of her.
Say something, mouse-brain! He’s going to think you’re an idiot!
“Uh-I’m sorry,” she stuttered.
He didn’t say anything. He just stared back at her, the same studying eyes. Oakleaf was really a strange cat in the Clan, in her opinion. It wasn’t that he was odd; he was just strange because he didn’t communicate with any cat. He used signals, gestures of the head, または just stared absentmindedly at you.
“I was just going,” she mewed then, and the little kit went off to find her brother, または Owlpaw, または some cat to talk to.
Sure enough, she found Owlpaw in the clearing.
“Aren’t あなた going to see Heatherstripe’s kits?” Lilykit asked.
She shook her head. “I already saw them.” She then sighed. “I can’t wait until I have kits of my own.”
The kit blinked at the apprentice. “Aren’t あなた a little young, and don’t あなた have to have a mate to have kits?”
Owlpaw nodded. “But someday, I will have a mate, and he will provide for me, and we’ll someday have kits of our own.” She sighed again, staring off into space. “Someday.”
Lilykit looked to see where she was staring off to. All she saw in her general direction was the Fresh-kill Chamber, Nightheart and Mousekit. I wonder what she was really thinking of.
Hmmm. Mousekit is so adorable when he plays with his father.
Lilykit jumped. That wasn’t her voice! She looked at Owlpaw with surprise. Was that Owlpaw?
“Owlpaw!”
Nightheart ran to his apprentice’s side.
“What is it, Nightheart?”
“Sweetstar says it’s time that あなた were made warrior.”
Owlpaw purred with complete disbelief. “Really?”
Nightheart nodded. “Come on. She wants あなた to be at the main route.”
“Let all ネコ old enough to catch their own prey gather at the root of the Great Tree.”
Sweetstar’s meow brought everyone in the Clan together, except for Heatherstripe, who was contently watching her newborns.
“Cats of ThunderClan,” she began, “as あなた know, new warriors in the Clan are always a good celebration. Today, I’d like あなた to look down at this apprentice in front of you. She has learned what it takes to be a warrior and has accepted the warrior code. Owlpaw, step forward.”
Owlpaw trembled as she came up, excitement in every bristle of her fur.
“Owlpaw, do あなた promise to defend your Clan as a warrior, even at the cost of your life?”
“I do,” she whispered, her voice trembling with excitement.
“Then it’s decided.” Sweetstar pressed her muzzle to the apprentice’s head. “From this moment on, あなた will be known as Owltalon. StarClan honors あなた for your compassion and your sincerity, and we welcome あなた as a ThunderClan warrior.”
Owltalon purred, respectfully licking the Clan leader’s shoulder.
“Owltalon! Owltalon!”
Lilykit looked around at the praising cats. Am I supposed to be cheering, too? She looked at her brother, and he shrugged.
“I’m a warrior, now!” Owltalon purred, running to Lilykit and Mousekit.
“Congratulations,” the she-kit mewed.
The new warrior shuddered with disbelief. “I can’t believe it! I’m a warrior; it’s my dream come true!”
“Don’t worry,” Mousekit squeaked, rubbing his cheek against her flank. “Soon, I’ll be a warrior, too.”
She purred, licking the tom between the ears. “You still have a long way to go, little one.”
As she walked away, Mousekit sighed. His blue eyes were glued to Owltalon’s face.
“I can’t wait until we’re apprentices,” he muttered. “That way, Owltalon will take me もっと見る seriously.”
“You like her,” Lilykit teased.
“No,” he protested. “I just want to have a conversation without her telling me how cute my squeaky voice is.”
“Sure.”
Lilykit, for some reason, remembered her dream from a while back. She saw her grandfather and other ネコ from the past. She had to ask Brackentail about it. Hopefully, he wasn’t taking his nap.
He’s awake!
“Brackentail?”
The elder looked up at the she-kit. “What’s up, Lilykit?”
“I have a 質問 to ask you.”
“Go ahead.”
“About a moon ago, right after あなた told us the story about Mousewhisker, I had this strange dream.” Lilykit tried to recall everything in the dream. “It was like I was looking at the past. I saw あなた and Mousewhisker and this cat named—Dreampaw.”
He looked up. “Dreampaw?”
She nodded.
“I haven’t heard her name in a long time,” he sighed.
“Who was she, Brackentail?”
“Dreampaw was a she-cat from a long time ago,” he explained. “She was Graybreeze’s sister.”
So that was Graybreeze in the dream.
“There was something different about Dreampaw,” he continued. “She was always interested in romance and having a perfect 愛 life. She found that in an apprentice named Rustypaw. Secretly—since apprentices weren’t supposed to mate—they met together every once in a while.” He sighed again. “Young 愛 is a powerful thing.”
“What happened?”
“Rustyspot became a warrior,” he said, “and, apparently, they had mated before the ceremony. A couple of quarter moons later, Birchleaf—the medicine cat at that time—had informed Lightningstar that Dreampaw was going to have kits. あなた can guess how mad Lightningstar was. He had told Rustyspot that he had to take care of her, and Dreampaw was not allowed to be alone with Rustyspot. At least one warrior had to be in the same area as them.”
“That must be annoying,” Lilykit murmured.
Brackentail purred. “I guess it might’ve been.” For the umpteenth time, he sighed. “Then, it was the 日 of Dreampaw’s kitting. Of course, she was young, and everything went wrong. It was terrible. I had nightmares myself for days, let alone how Rustyspot had to deal with it. She gave birth to two toms, but only one survived. And, after three moons, Dreampaw died, too.”
The she-kit felt like she was about to cry.
“Rustyspot did not cope well, and he never even spoke to that one thing left of his mate. His son grew up without being acquainted with his father; of course, he knew who he was. And, Rustyspot had another mate, and another pair of kits. After he finally apologized to his son, he died. The medicine cat 発言しました that it was because of his grieving.”
“Who was that son?” she asked.
Brackentail gulped. “That was Nightheart, your father.”
Lilykit gasped in disbelief. His father never even talked to him, and when he finally did, he dropped dead! That was a difficult thing to hear.
“And those two kits,” he added, “they were Jadestem and Russetwind.”
The she-kit barely paid attention. She couldn’t believe that Rustyspot would do that to her father!
“Why would あなた have a dream like that, anyways?” he rasped.
She shrugged. “I still don’t know.”
“You’d better run along, now,” he purred, gazing at her with his sightless eyes.
“Goodbye, Brackentail.”
“Lilykit!” At the same time, her mother was calling her from the nursery. “It’s time to get back in, now!”
As the little she-kit went to Sweetstar, she started thinking about what was the reason for having that strange dream.
Chapter X Coming Soon. Haha, the letter X. How did the Romans come up with that for number 10, lol
