If he does go then the office can't carry on it'd be like the sub par scrubs med school which was horrible. I'd say, hopefully, he is just doing as you all hav mentioned and that is to get power over the network so he'll prob get a yr extension. So long as it ends with Michael having some kind of happy relationship i'll be ok with it and will follow all the cast to whatever else they do especially Jim and Dwight
@PrisonMike91 - It is entirely possible that Carell is just making a ploy. Let's face it though, The Office has been going downhill for a while now. I think Steve wants to get out to move onto the big screen, because he has been a big movie star for quite a few years now. Like I said before, it's all about money. Carell wants more money than what he's getting on The Office, and NBC profits greatly from The Office, like you mentioned. Without The Office, NBC is going to be in trouble. Community and Parks & Rec seem to have a pretty loyal following. Now that The Office has become so mainstream (remember in season 1 when they said they were so shocked that they got picked up for a second season?), more people are watching it, and therefore NBC is getting more money. But NBC needs The Office since they're struggling with their other shows. So yes, it is possible that they'll try to push Carell into more seasons. I for one hope he leaves after season 7. You said that he has power on the show - so true. I can't see the other major cast members signing on for more seasons without Steve. Many of them have made a name for themselves from The Office - before The Office do you think paparazzi were following John Krasinski around? No. Would Angela Kinsey be on Clairol ads on TV? No. I get the sense that the actors think they're 'big shots' now that they're famous. It seems like many of them are ready to move on, just like Carell is.
@snoznoodle - Totally right, NBC will be in trouble without The Office. It's one of their most popular shows and without Steve it would be nothing. The show is *definitely* not what it used to be, and I'm in the same boat as you - I used to love this show so, so much but now I don't even care about it. In fact, I've quit watching it, which makes me sad, but I'll always love seasons 1, 2, and 3. Without Carell/Michael the show would just be more of a mess than it already is. Too bad the writers/Greg Daniels/etc weren't smart and didn't end it while they were on a high (like the UK version). But here in the US, money > quality, unfortunately.
@electricelle - I'd say that in some ways it is losing steam and in some ways it is not. It continues to become more and more mainstream - so many people watch it now! - but that means that they've had to dumb down the humor so that it can appeal to a wider audience. That change in humor has alienated viewers like myself who were fans of the older seasons. But you're right, seven seasons for a prime time show is pretty impressive, and I know that the cast/writers had no idea just how successful the show would be.
I just feel like The Office is running out of plausible ideas. For example, the whole Michael Scott Paper Company that ultimately led to nothing. Well, Pam is now a salesperson but that's all that changed. Pam went to art school, perhaps her greatest dream, but failed and refused to try again. Once again, that led nowhere. So it's like they're throwing all these plot twists at us but they're not really going anywhere.
The humor has gotten "dumber" (for lack of a better word) and therefore less funny (for me, anyways). The show used to be all about awkward moments. That was a huge factor for the funny moments but now they're gone. One of my friends, who never has watched The Office, watched a season 6 episode and mentioned how dry the humor was. I just thought, "Wow, if you think season 6 is dry, I can't even imagine how you'd choose to describe season 1!"
But it is better than a lot of other TV, that's true. I just can't watch it anymore because I hate seeing what was once my favorite show collapse in on itself like a dying star, as Jan Levinson might say. ;)
I think the peak season for me was season 3. But even up through last season there were great moments (the Michael Scott Paper Company was brilliant, but the story-arc wrapped up too quickly).
But I'll miss Michael Scott on tv regardless.
);):);):);):):):):) hhhhhhhhhhhAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL
The stories have become a bit too repetitive, Jim and Pam are pretty much sorted now, married kid job and they were a big part of the cliffhanger of what would happen next without that it has gone a little flat we're not really waiting for anything to happen anymore bar a catastropic attempt at a relationship by Michael, and now Andy and Erin.
Maybe it needs a new character erin is alrite but not really doing much even if she is a bit of a nutter.
Though i'll still watch it no matter how long it will continue for i think steve carell's contract should be extended to the 8 years like the rest of the cast and the writers should focus on making that the end and creating the best possible ending for the characters especially Michael. Let it end as good as it started unlike many shows that were bled dry.
Haha also interesting posts there melthomas..........really insightful :)
