lot of whedon shows, que surprise for me
but buffy has always been in the media for female empowerment and several issues on the mythology and such although personally myself i think angel is better for that it's much more darker....more real almost and the big bad enemy......is a law firm lol well obvously a evil law firm but still very anti american system and very in to more greyness than everything being black and white
also firefly is fab in the way it completely defies all government and literally shows us how much control the government will have over our lives if we let them

personally i think dollhouse (whedon's newest show) will knock all of them off the chart by the sounds of it

anyways i think southpark, family guy, queer as folk are all pretty self explanitory,
batle star is very political to me, for those of you that don't know star trek has the first on screen interacial kiss, all in the family i have not watched but i looked up controversial shows on the net cause i felt the need for more options and apparently it has delt with feminism, abortion, rape and lots of issues
finally skins is all about teenager culture in britain aka is basically a bunch of kids having sex and getting stoned but for all of them it is mainly family issues that seem to be the problem

I have great respect for Joss Whedon and love all his shows, and yes, some of them have very important messages...but South Park is so topical and really pokes fun at all our pop culture, whereas Whedon's stuff is more 'big picture' of morality and good versus evil. Southpark is more a social commentary.

No question...this show rips open all of our social fopahs and beats us over the head with them. I am always amazed by how brilliantly Trey and Matt get their point across. Most recently the episode about Britney Spears ('Britney's New Look') amazed me. They usually make fun of her, but in this episode Britney just can't take the paparazzi anymore, so she shoots herself. She lives, but half her head is gone. Even in this state, the paparazzi still chase after her and say bad things about her. For instance, she sings at the MTV Awards and everyone criticizes her of lip-synching (despite the fact she has no lips) and "phoning in her performance." I had never really felt bad for Britney Spears until I saw this episode. It made me consider all that she must go through being the butt of everyone's jokes.

My goodness, I can't say enough about the genius of South Park. It's not just a crude cartoon...it's filled with social commentary that more people should pay attention to.

nosemuffin picked The Wire:
This show has brilliantly glossed over so many that feed poverty in the US, and spun them all together in such a seamless fashion. The problems with law enforcement and the justice system, drugs, alcohol, violence, hormones in food, the news room, the failure of the educational system, corporations, the news room, and SO many more. It's brilliant, and it gives you a really shocking look at life for some people.
