Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
2013 was a surprising year for bad movies, though cynics may think every year is overflowing with bombs. A top ten list is usually a difficult venture, because there really ar…en\'t ten films most years that are the very bottom of the cinematic barrel. This year, it was actually a chore to figure out which ten should make the cut. This boring feat of nepotism in honor of religion-centric nonsense is made all the worse by the very general positives inherent in the story. Something could have been made out of this, if we weren\'t beholden to the backdrop of Scientology, and if Jaden Smith (once a passable, young actor) didn\'t repeatedly prove himself unable to convince of anything at all.Worse, several scenes look like unfinished dailies, and most of the dialog is laughable.Much as Chloë Grace Moretz is usually impressive, and should go on to give great performances, she can\'t get past the material she\'s in here. Not only an unnecessary remake, but one that somehow manages to remove all the tension from a classic, and leave it almost in the realm of self-mockery. Everything is as over-the-top as it can be, and right from the beginning, which makes it hard to believe that it runs this direction for any reason other than that it thinks anyone watching it is pretty stupid, so why try?Here\'s one that must have seemed like a good idea on paper, but crashed so hard that it is only worth watching to see how unfunny comic talent can be when thrust into the wrong position. Sad jokes run into characters who are supposed to be funny based on how stupid they are, and it comes together to produce nothing but boredom. This is a film that makes it hard not to hold it against the actors, because they know it not only isn\'t funny, it\'s insulting.Another horror remake, this one moves past being a bad movie, and is instead just rather sad. Pure cash grab, this is one that is made by people who clearly don\'t understand horror, or what made the original as good as it was.It takes boring, genre cliches and figures that cranking up the silly factor will somehow revitalize them into workable moments. It\'s ten minutes in the editing room away from being one of the year\'s best comedies. When you can\'t come close to touching a couple of complete unknowns making a movie with virtually no budget, basically on a kind of lark, you shouldn\'t make the attempt. This one should probably be higher (or lower) just based on pure stupidity, but it actually does go all the way around to something that has comedic value. It also possibly has some merit if we remove everything to do with the "story" portion of things, and only pay attention to the live performances. This is one that is so far gone that it becomes hard to describe the exact way in which it is so awful. It\'s an odd combination of delusional effort and laughable sense of self-importance, that somehow comes together to create a story about trying to fetch for a band in the midst of "end of the world" rioting. But, it is funny.Another film in the same realm as "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" with the additional treat of being a sequel. This one has no redeeming qualities though, and is even more insulting. A film made with nothing in mind, beyond the idea that there are plenty of people so stupid that they\'ll see it.Four comedians (and more in guest spots), who are all extremely funny, get together to pull off the most inane, ludicrous gags, and leave you wanting less at every turn. This one does have moments that are funny, clearly straight from the napkin doodles that sold someone the movie, but overall it holds its audience in extremely low regard.Continuing the trend, this one finds itself so low on the list just as a result of pure boredom. While some scenes are actually pretty good, they add up to about seven total minutes, and the rest is painful to sit through. Given the ability, no one would pass up the opportunity to fast-forward the majority of the thankfully short 92 minutes. The story meant to connect the gags is mind-numbing, most of those gags are so juvenile, unfunny, and outwardly ridiculous that you start to think many of them had a fake audience, and it has never been more true that you get everything worth watching right in the trailer.Oddly enough, this film actually has a lot in common with going on a world-class bender. If you can imagine writing, then filming, the entire movie in one day. After you have about thirty minutes worth of the movie in the can, you start drinking, a lot.It isn\'t even "bad" so much as it is just nonsensical, pointless, and absolutely devoid of comedic content. This one moves as far down the list as it does on the back of the effort itself, which is basically Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg thumbing their noses at the world like a spoiled child, and saying that they\'ll make any random nonsense they want. The most celebrated of the torturous films on this list, and the one that easily could have been worked into something rather good, this one opted for the cheapest laughs at every turn, and the plot is slapped together in the laziest way possible.Apparently, the reason Melissa McCarthy is funny is that she\'s fat, so a good deal of the comedy has her doing things like crawling through car windows... it\'s funny, because she\'s fat. Get it?Beyond that, comedy is largely a result of being drunk and stupid, and screenplay construction is mostly something you do by piecing together episodes of Scooby Doo.An insult to most of the dumbest people on the planet, the worst movie of the year falls as far as it does by way of its own delusions of intelligence. Ostensibly a grand statement on the decline of western civilization (or something), it isn\'t clever enough to realize that it\'s focusing on a couple of insane people, and doing a fantastically boring job of it.No movie in a decade has offered less to keep you watching it, or has had less interest in the realism of its own script. If it weren\'t for the fact that every so often it says, "Hey, Look! Hot girl," at you, no one would have watched it all the way through. It was a year gone wrong, and there are plenty more movies to avoid. Most of them are a result of missed opportunities and/or depressingly weak efforts. While not the bottom of the barrel, other films that are ultimately a waste of time include: The Big Wedding, The Last Stand, R.I.P.D., 21 & Over, The Hangover III, We\'re the Millers, and The Getaway. The combined box office gross of these top ten worst movies is $628 million, and that despite the fact that it includes one of the lowest-grossing films of the year - "Metallica Through the Never" - which only earned just over $4 million. Comparatively, the highest-grossing movie of the year - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - made $420 million. There was a lot to be hopeful for in 2013, and a lot of fans were probably looking forward to some of the films on this list. It turned out to be a year of disappointments, moreso than recent years, because it has been a while since so many films with big names, or legitimately interesting plots, were so botched, or simply made no effort. It will be interesting to see how this formula plays out in the next year or two, especially as the theater scene continues to change. Will we keep seeing so many big names in pure cash grabs with scripts clearly written over a weekend, with stars showing up for anything with a big enough paycheck?
Nicholas Cage stars as Cris Johnson in this Sci Fi movie entitled Next. Cris is a Las Vegas magician who actually has the incredible ability to look into the immediate future.… He can peer about two minutes ahead in time. This supernatural ability works pretty well when Johnson plays poker, but it\'s also pretty handy in preventing Johnson from meeting an early demise. It\'s a pretty sweet deal, but his talent also has some disappointing drawbacks.Cage\'s hair is probably the most memorable thing about this movie. His hair has been the butt of many jokes, and his do in this movie has not escaped speculation. Clever editing and intriguing premises are injected into this film. However, none of the above has done anything to eradicate the negative points. The twist ending barely saves this movie from totally bombing. Most critics have agreed that the film commits one misstep after another. There are multiple holes in the story and loopy logic is filtered into the story line. Bad dialogue is another big issue with this movie. It\'s a shame too, the primary characters are decent actors. However, their talents weren\'t enough to make their lines more interesting. The film is rated PG-13. There is bad language and drug use included in the story. There are some allusions to sex. Violence would probably be the primary negative point. However, a PG-13 rating might not deter some families from allowing pre-teens and teens to view the movie. The plot appeared to be quite slow in many places. However, the multiple holes in the story line left many in the audience with questions. Most of the audience reviews were positive over the plot with the exception of the holes. The twist ending prevented some consumers from demanding a refund on their tickets at the box office. The ending is probably the most exciting part of the movie. There aren\'t too many complaints with the acting. The biggest problem audiences face is wondering why actors with some talent have chosen to invest that talent in a film with a faulty plot. Of course, Cage\'s recent financial problems were a motivating factor for him. The only thing most critics could figure out about the rest of the talent is that they didn\'t mind being in a bad film with someone like Cage. It makes sense.Although this movie isn\'t considered one of Cage\'s best films, it\'s watchable. It won\'t ever be considered a classic. Some families may not want to watch the film because of the movie\'s PG-13 rating. There is foul language, sex, and violence in the story line. If there\'s nothing else available, you could pass your time in far worse ways.Nicholas Cage was originally considered for the role of Brad Hamilton in the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". However, the studio felt his performance was too dark. Instead, the role went to Judge Reinhold.
Unique Classic Movies: An Inside Look at the Movie "Them!"
In 1954, American moviegoers first encountered the movie "Them!" which featured a nest of huge, irradiated ants in the New Mexico desert. This was one of the very first "nucle…ar monster" flicks from the 1950s, and it was also the first in the "big bug" genre. It received an Oscar nomination for special effects and won the Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing. For fans of early science fiction movies, this is a must-see.Originally, the producers of "Them!" wanted a 3-D color film; however, malfunctions in the Warner Brothers\' camera rig kept filming from starting for several days. The studio then decided to return to black and white and shoot the film in traditional widescreen. The only color element in the movie is the title, which appears in a bright blue and red against a black and white background. The concrete spillways of the Los Angeles River have become the backdrop for many famous scenes in films, from the car race in "Grease" to one of the chase scenes in "Terminator 2." When the police attack the ants\' final nest in "Them!" the concrete spillways serve as the setting. This section, between the Seventh and First Street Bridges, still sits east of downtown Los Angeles. It is possible that tension brewed between two of the main actors, James Whitmore and James Arness. Whitmore was the shorter of the two and put lifts in his shoes to make up the difference. When Whitmore is not speaking in several scenes in which Arness also appears, he uses hand motions and gestures to bring attention to himself that do not appear to contribute to the script. The giant ants are really a purplish green. One filming blooper involves the final battle scene. One ant appears in the foreground without one of its sides, showing the inner workings. Later releases of the film have covered up this error although earlier prints retain it.Between its release date in June 1954 and the end of the year, the movie "Them!" made $2 million in American and Canadian theaters. Overall, it produced the 51st highest total of any movie for the year. Reviews in The New York Times and Variety magazine praise its additions to the science fiction genre. Over time, it has kept its place in the most beloved science fiction flicks. If you are undertaking a study of the best science fiction movies of the 1950s, "Them!" is one film you have to see. Others include "The Thing" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."When famed actor John Wayne saw "Them!" he realized that James Arness had a great deal of skill as an actor. He recommended Arness for the part of Marshal Matt Dillon in the television powerhouse "Gunsmoke," which ran from 1955 to 1975.

"Nine" is a movie musical about Guido Contini, a famous filmmaker whose attempts to realize his cinematic fantasies are complicated by his relationships with women. The film i…s an adaptation of the Tony Award winning musical "Nine," which was itself an adaptation of Federico Fellini\'s classic "8 1/2." The movie was directed by Rob Marshall and stars Daniel Day Lewis as the conflicted Guido. It also features Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren, Fergie, and Judi Dench as the myriad women in his life.Guido is an illustrious Italian filmmaker with a dark secret. He has developed a crippling case of writer\'s block. While he is ostensibly working on a film called "Italia," in reality his well of creativity has dried up. He reminisces on the important women in his life: his wife Luisa, his leading lady Claudia, his mistress Carla, his faithful costume designer Lilli, and his beloved mother. But as he fantasizes his younger days and the women he\'s loved, he must also create elaborate fantasies for the press about a film that may never come to fruition. He catches the eye of a young fashion journalist named Stephanie, and they strike up a flirtation.Things become even more complicated when Guido\'s mistress and wife arrive in Rome. His beleaguered wife Luisa catches sight of Carla, realizes what is going on, and threatens to leave Guido. Guido then rebukes Carla, which sends her into an emotional spiral that ends in a suicide attempt. He is momentarily comforted by the arrival of his muse, Claudia, but soon discovers that he\'s lost her as well. She tells him that he is only able to see her as a fantasy, not as a real person, and is unable to love the real her. It soon becomes clear to Guido that he\'s lost every woman who has ever been important to him. He calls off the movie, telling his crew that there was never a movie; just an idea."Nine" is a flashy musical powered solely by the wattage of its assembled movie stars. It has an unimpeachable cast: Daniel Day Lewis as the perpetually conflicted director; Marion Cotillard as the ingenue turned forgotten wife; Penelope Cruz as the fiery mistress; and Nicole Kidman as the untouchable muse. But despite the movie\'s star power, it can\'t escape the shadow cast by the Fellini original. "Nine" attempts to tell the story of the creative process; to dissect the concessions and compromises that must necessarily accompany genius. Fellini\'s "8 1/2" makes this conflict between art and personal relationships palpable. "Nine," on the other hand, feels like the dance remix interpretation of creative genius. It is a movie about creativity that is totally lacking in creativity.Much of the fault is Rob Marshall\'s chaotic, uninspired direction. Marshall, who previously directed the Oscar winning adaptation of "Chicago," has experience translating stage musicals to the big screen. Unfortunately, he did little to unlock "Nine" from its stage-bound beginnings. Instead of making a uniquely cinematic version of the stage musical, he imbued every frame with a sense of the story\'s theatrical antecedents. Musical numbers take place on black box stages, when they could take place anywhere in the cinema ready city of Rome. Guido dances through barren sound stages when he could be dancing through the immaculately conceived set pieces of Fellini. At every turn, Marshall decided to box his story in instead of allowing it the free reign of cinematic potential. It is not a terrible movie, and some of the performances, particularly Marion Cotillard\'s, are quite good. But it is hard to recommend "Nine" when "8 1/2" covers the same ground, and does it so much more effectively.*Whatever Rob Marshall\'s directorial defects may be, he assembled an excellent cast. Daniel Day Lewis doesn\'t quite have the world weary languor of Marcello Mastroianni, who originated the part in "8 1/2," but he once again proves that he\'s game for anything. Marion Cotillard is particularly good as the long suffering Luisa, and imbues what might have been a thankless role with an aching melancholy.*The quality of the songs varies, and not every actor has the necessary vocal skills. For the most part, however, they all acquit themselves admirably.*Rob Marshall\'s direction is chaotic and occasionally unpleasant. The film is polished, moves quickly, and looks good, but it is surprisingly lifeless for a movie purporting to be about creative expression.*The song and dance numbers are well choreographed, but the songs leave something to be desired. Aside from Marion Cotillard\'s melancholic ballad, the songs are pretty dull. Given that the film is a musical, and the narrative surrounding the musical interludes is thin at best, the lack of catchy songs is a problem."Nine" is not a terrible film, and it has its highlights. Unfortunately, it ultimately fails to evoke the contemplative whimsy of the Fellini original. It aims for art but lands on the pretty but shallow commercialism of a perfume ad. Fans of the actors get a kick out of seeing their favorite movie stars singing and dancing, but it\'s by no means a classic entry into the movie musical canon. There were three new songs created for the film that were not a part of the original Broadway score. There was "Guarda La Luna, a lullaby sung by Sophia Loren. Kate Hudson sang the song "Cinema Italiano," an upbeat homage to 60\'s pop. Finally, there was "Take It All," which was arranged as a solo for Marion Cotillard.

"Hairspray" is a musical movie that was released in 2007. It is full of catchy songs and has a fun plot mixed with the social issues of the 1960s, such as civil rights and ind…ividualism. It stars famous actors such as Zach Efron and John Travolta in some unusual roles. Read on to learn more about this movie. The film is a remake of a film of the same name, released in 1988. John Waters directed the original, and it starred Ricki Lake and Divine. Unlike the 2007 version, it was not a musical. However, it followed the same plot and had the same overall tone. In 2002, the original movie was developed into a Broadway musical. It proved to be very popular, and the 2007 film followed its success on the stage. The story follows Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teen living in Baltimore who dreams of being a dancer on "The Corny Collins Show." She tries out but is rejected due to her weight and views on racial integration. However, she meets the son of the host of "The Corny Collins Show," Negro Day, in detention, who teaches her some new moves. She uses these moves in a dance hosted by Corny Collins himself and is invited to dance on the show. She quickly becomes a local celebrity, sending the Baltimore youth scene in a new direction. The film has some very interesting casting choices. John Travolta plays the role of Tracy\'s mother, Edna Turnblad, who was played by Divine in the original film. This role is typically played in drag. Christopher Walken plays Tracy\'s father, the owner of a local joke shop. Nikki Blonsky shines as Tracy and brings a lot of sparkle to the role originally played by Ricki Lake. Zach Efron, Amanda Bynes, and Brittany Snow were all popular teen stars at the time of the film\'s release and occupied roles typical of their careers at the time. The film also contains memorable performances by Queen Latifah as Maybelle and Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussle, the manager of the local television station that airs "The Corny Collins Show."The original 1988 movie was not a musical. The music performed in the film was written for the 2002 Broadway version of the story. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote the songs. There were a few changes to some of the lyrics in the film version but, for the most part, the music stays true to the stage musical. A few songs also had to be removed due to filming and time constraints. Two songs, "Ladies\' Choice" and "New Girl in Town," were added to the film."Hairspray" already had a strong reputation to build upon. The original 1988 movie was a cult film, and the Broadway version proved to be very popular. It earned over $27 million, which broke the existing record for opening weekend box office sales for a musical film. Audiences reacted positively to the movie, and box office and DVD sales were very strong. Critics also enjoyed it for the most part, and the film holds a 91 percent rating on the popular movie review website Rotten Tomatoes."Hairspray" is a musical set in the 1960s. It has fun, catchy songs that match the time period of the setting and a memorable plot. It received a lot of positive attention and awards on Broadway, and the movie version proved to be very successful. It has earned its place as a classic musical film. While many of the characters in the film are teens, the cast members themselves were all adults at the time of release. Zach Efron was 20, Amanda Bynes and Brittany Snow were 21, and Nikki Blonsky was 19. It\'s common for slightly older actors to play teens, as school lessons don\'t have to be scheduled around filming and adults can legally work longer hours in most cases.
Loosely based on P.D. James\' titular novel, this Alfonso Cuaron directed film starring Clive Owen portrays a dystopian future where the entire human race has become infertile…. No new children have been born in twenty years and news reports feature updates on the current youngest person alive. Owen must help a young woman who is miraculously pregnant refugee survive.Ellen Page plays a pregnant teenager who decides to place her child into adoption with an infertile couple, played by Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. The situation gets wildly complicated as Bateman develops an uncomfortably close relationship with Page\'s titular, quirky character and threatening his marriage. This comedy starring powerhouse comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler follows Fey\'s character as she tries to have a baby but learns she can\'t carry a pregnancy due to her advanced maternal age and a malformed uterus. She hired Poehler\'s character to be her surrogate; madcap hilarity ensues. This comedy-drama starring Amy Adams as an aspiring home cook and devotee of Julia Child, played by Meryl Streep, doesn\'t at first appear to have anything to do with infertility at all. There is one brief scene where Child receives a letter from her sister and revealing that she is pregnant; Child is overcome with emotion as her husband, played by Stanley Tucci. The Childs never had children of their own and it is widely speculated that Julia Child pursued her cooking with such fervor because they might have been infertile.Based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger, Rachel McAdams plays a woman named Clara who falls in love with a time traveler named Henry, played by Eric Bana. Told from Clara\'s point of view, Henry appears to her throughout her life at different points and ages in his timeline. As they fall in love and eventually marry, Clara experiences repeated miscarriages because the unborn fetuses also share Henry\'s time traveling genes. This animated children\'s movie from Disney/Pixar features only a few seconds of infertility, but it shapes the entire film. The viewer learns that Carl, the crotchety old protagonist, was once a dashing young man madly in love with his wife, Ellie. Early in their marriage they experience a devastating pregnancy loss and seem unable to have children; they focus instead on being happy as a family of two, saving up for a trip to South America. This melodrama starring Annette Benning, Naomi Watts and Kerry Washington plays into a variety of stereotypes about birthmothers, adopted children and infertile women. Washington plays an infertile woman desperate to adopt a child while Watts plays the willful, selfish daughter given up for adoption by Benning. This German drama places infertility in the context of erotic intrigue as Hanna and Simon, a long-term couple who believe that they are infertile, each begin an affair with a man named Adam. When Hanna learns she is pregnant with twins (but unsure of the father\'s identity), she calls off her relationship with Simon as their complex menage a trois unravels. The Greens, a married couple played by Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton, are devastated to learn that they cannot have children of their own. As they mourn and grieve this loss, they bury their wishes for their perfect child in their garden... only to have him magically appear in their lives the next day. This comedy starring Olivia Munn and Paul Schneider play a married couple who have difficulty trying to conceive. Schneider\'s character believes he may be infertile and hatches a plan to break into a sperm bank with his friends, where he once donated a sperm sample. This film was universally panned by critics for its crude humor and ridiculous plot.Infertility is a popular story in Hollywood films; unfortunately for most films, infertility is played to the extremes. While there are a very small handful of films such as "Up" and "Julie & Julia" that give a glimpse into how devastating the infertility experience can be, infertility is portrayed in melodramatic fashion with often magical or miraculous resolutions.
