I'm really confused about the ending...

Why was the pathway covered with grass, vines, and trees when Chihiro was just gone for a few days?
And why was their car covered in dust?
Was it years she had been in the Spirit World?

I can only "guess" - it wasn't something read...I mean, much time could have passed in reality & time differ from the spiritual world, but I looked at it as the way of the spirit realm protecting itself from outsiders. To envelope, like a shield that protects from evidence...like vines that enclose an entrance. It could be either way~ (or something COMPLETELY different).
