Queen Seondeok is a 2009 South Korean historical drama that chronicles the life of Queen Seondeok of Silla
Deokman (Queen Seondeoks childhood name) was born as Princess Cheonmyeong\'s twin and a member of the Silla royal family, but a prophecy leads to her abandonment as a baby. She was later brought back to the Silla palace, where she joined forces with her twin sister to oppose Mishil, a royal concubine who wanted to seize power. Mishil devised sinister plans to have the two Silla princesses exiled from the kingdom.
Age Lift: The historical Yusin was closer in age to Chunchu than Deokman.
Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: The three female leads; Deokman/Queen Seondeok, Misil and Cheonmyeong.
Badass Cape: General Seolweon. Yudin, Alcheon and Wolya later on.
Badass Grandpa: Munno, Chilsuk and General Seolwon.
Better to Die than Be Killed: Lady Misil, Chilsuk and Seok-Pum.
Character Development: Alcheon initially was introduced as a Consummate Professional, Honor Before Reason guy (though this was the norm among Hwarangs). After the war against Baekjae, he softens up and is shown to more open with his emotions.
Charles Atlas Superpower: Yusin and Godo, though the latter is justified being The Big Guy.
Chickification: For some reason, Deokman stops being an Action Girl once she regain her princess status. On the other hand, Lady Mishil\'s status as one is justified, as she clearly aged (despite the actress still being in her late thirties).
Christmas Cake: Queen Seondeok near the end. Unfortunately, she dies unmarried.
Covert Pervert: Implied with Yusin, though it\'s actually important to the plot.
Enemy Civil War: Invoked by Chunchu to Mishil\'s husbands as part of his Batman Gambit. It worked temporarily, but the two got better.
Everything\'s Better with Princesses: Subverted with Deokman and Cheonmyeong.
Fair-Play Villain: Chilsuk to an extent. While he is firmly aligned with Mishil, he is generally a pretty straight shooter, at one point helping Yusin become Pungwolju.
Fantastic Racism: Sort of. Yusin\'s family weren\'t really looked at well by the rest of the kingdom due to being Gaiya.
Gaiya is a small country near Silla that was absorbed into it due to its small size and strength. Many of its royalty/high position people were given similar roles within Silla
Furo Scene: The reason Yusin blew Deokman\'s cover.
Generation Xerox: A powerful female ruler who is the Love Interest of both the head general and the prime minister. Think carefully, am I talking about Mishil, Seolwon and Saejong? Or Deokman/Queen Seondeok, Yusin and Bidam?
King Jinheung dies because of a heart disease. The same disease that eventually killed both King Jinpyeong and Queen Seondeok.
Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Lady Misil is usually dressed in purple, which also happens to be her most well-known attire.
I Know Your True Name: Sort Of. A document uncovered by Mishil reveals that Deokman\'s birth name is actually Inmyeong.
Kansas City Shuffle: In a pivotal plot point, Deokman has Wolcheon compute the date of the next solar eclipse, apparently determines that no eclipse is to occur, then sends Bidam and Yusin off to trick Mishil with a supposedly fake date. The eclipse
supposed to happen; Deokman correctly predicts that Mishil will believe Bidam and Yusin are out to deceive her and then announce that no eclipse is to occur. This leads to a major credibility hit for Mishil and sets the stage for Deokman\'s Big Entrance.
Kill the Ones You Love: Chilsuk\'s Accidental Murder of Sohwa.
Kissing Cousins: Yusin is Deokman\'s first cousin through his mother, and Bidam is Deokman\'s first cousin once removed through his father, King Jinji.
Lady and Knight: The Korean equivalent. Deokman and Yusin (or/and Bidam) are the bright version, while Lady Misil and General Seolwon are the dark one.
Light Feminine Dark Feminine: Deokman and Cheonmyeong are the light to Lady Misil\'s dark.
Lightning Bruiser: Munno, Chilsuk and Bidam are all hard hitting speedsters.
Lonely at the Top: Deokman once she became Queen Seondeok.
, the only Happily Married couple until the end of the series are Yusin\'s parents.
Love Makes You Evil: Lady Mishil and Bidam. Like mother like son indeed.
Magnetic Hero: Deokman and Yusin. Lady Mishil can count as an antagonist example.
Mighty Glacier: Yusin is a downplayed version of this. He is not slow, but he doesn\'t have the agility that Munno, Bidam and Chilsuk all have.
Mr. Fanservice: Bidam, Alcheon, Yusin, Wolya, Chunchu.
Murder the Hypotenuse: Subverted in the finale when Yusin killed Bidam.
Averted by Mishil\'s husbands. Chunchu instigate an Enemy Civil War via power struggle within their families, but Lady Mishil arrived to halt the "family crisis"..
Non-Action Guy: King Jinpyeong, Prime Minister Eul Je, Minister Yong Chu, Mishil\'s son Hajong and Prince Chunchu.
Parental Abandonment: Deokman was exiled from Silla to be spared from Mishil\'s wrath. Prince Chunchu was later orphaned following Cheonmyeong\'s death and Bidam was abandoned by his mother at an early age, and his Parental Substitute was killed off too.
Parental Substitute: Sohwa to Deokman, Munno to Bidam.
Princesses Prefer Pink: Cheonmyeong is usually seen wearing pink.
Polyamory: Mishil have two husbands, Prime Minister Saejong and General Seolwon.
Posthumous Character: King Jinheung. Later, Lady Mishil.
Prophecy Twist: Deokman being abandoned in the first place was because a prophecy stated that if the king was to have twins, the royal family would have no more sons. But Cheonmyeong having Chunchu defies this.
Averted. The prophecy states the royal family would have no more sons of royal blood status. Chunchu is not considered royal blood status because his father was not of royal status.
Really Gets Around: Lady Mishil and her brother Misaeng.
Redemption Equals Death: Seol-Ri, the head priestess and General Seolwon.
The Rival: Munno and Chilsuk, Yusin with both Seok-Pum and Jeobeong. Yusin and Bidam.
Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Lady Mishil and her followers.
Separated at Birth: Deokman and Cheonmyeong. Bidam to his family.
She Cleans Up Nicely: Deokman, both as a priestess and as a princess.
Sibling Triangle: Both Deokman and Cheonmyeong fell in love with Yusin at one point.
Stern Teacher: Munno to Bidam. Also Yusin to his men.
Subordinate Excuse: Nearly the entire cast have this.
Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Yusin, Wolya and Daenambo.
Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Chilsuk and Bidam. Both Lady Mishil and Seolwon can be this when they want to be.
Tomboy and Girly Girl: Deokman and Cheonmyeong. Emphasized in their first encounter.
Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Cheonmyeong, Sohwa and King Jinpyeong.
True Blue Femininity: Deokman after regaining her status as princess until being crowned as queen. Also, this is Misil\'s second favorite color after purple.
Undying Loyalty: Chilsuk to Mishil. Later, Yusin to Deokman/Queen Seondeok.
Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Granted, Seondeok, Yusin, Alcheon, the three kings, Cheonmyeong, Chunchu, and (maybe) Mishil were all real people. And Queen Seondeok really did order the construction of Cheomseongdae (which still stands). Basically everything else is completely made up.
Deokman and Cheonmyeong weren\'t twins. Some historical records have Deokman as the older princess, and others Cheonmyeong, so the scriptwriters decided to compromise by writing them as twins in this show.
Warrior Prince: Wolya was a prince of the Kaya tribe. Bidam is Lady Mishil\'s son to King Jinji.
Well-Intentioned Extremist: Lady Mishil and her followers, except for her Dirty Coward son Hajong.
Wise Beyond Their Years: Deokman was a Teen Genius, so is Chunchu. Yusin is also full of wisdom. Lady Mishil is (yet again) an antagonistic example.
