It proabably wouldn't be useful, because I would want to learn a weird language not spoken in the US, but it would be cool! But the other would not be useful at all because I don't cuss b/c I have chidren :)

Temptasia, come on! If you could cuss in a different language, then you could cuss as much as you want and your kids wouldn't know it. That's what my mom did. She was fluent in Spanish and whenever she got really mad, she would cuss in Spanish so I wouldn't know what she was saying :)

I'm also fluent in Spanish and it is extremely useful. There are many people where I live that don't speak English so it's always nice to help translate for them.

Cussing might be more fun but it would only be actually USEFUL if you were a very angry or rude person. I am fluent in English (duh) and reasonably fluent in French (I can read signs and menus and understand basic things people say).

as someone who can cuss in several different languages, let me tell you, it is not beneficial at all. But fun to yell when you're angry! :D

I swear enough in English as it is. I don't think I need to learn how to do it in any other languages.

"I don't cuss b/c I have chidren" - Don't make me get on my soap box. So-called 'swearing' does not turn kids into Serial Killers.

I'm interpreting "cuss" as "curse", not just a few expletives, so this would be more useful, as I would then have a basic grasp of grammar, gender (if the language has gender), pronunciation and syntax for twenty - let me say that again: TWENTY (!!) languages. But that would require a fairly extensive set of curse words and phrases in each language - my curse vocab in Cantonese, for instance, isn't extensive enough to help with anything other than my pronunciation (where it does help, by the way). Having that basic sense - enough to cuss - helps to identify which language is being spoken to you, so that you can then track down someone who can translate (and also will help you hear if others are talking smack about you).

LOL...I love your reasoning Harold.

I'm passably fluent in French and Italian. I only wish I was completely fluent in something besides English. A few phrases of Spanish and German does not a UN translator make. Besides, to a get a decent job here in Canada, being fully bilingual will get you hired every time. Too bad they only teach French grammar and not conversational French.

BTW, I don't cuss either. Not because I have kids, but it's just not me. It's VERY rare that a cuss word spews from these lips...it's like a foreign language to me anymore, though in my ill-spent youth I cussed like a sailor.

OK, rant over.

I can already speak four languages fluently. who the hell says cuss? anyway, I can swear in Greman, Finnish, Sweedish, Latin, Greek, French, Welsh, English, Chinese, Russian, and Tiwanise. It comes in handy a hell of a lot more than you think it would.
