"Magic always has its price".

This is a well-known quote from Once Upon A Time, first uttered によって Rumplestilskin in the season 1 episode The Price Of Gold. When I first heard it, I assumed that he was saying this simply to manipulate シンデレラ and to justify killing her fairy-godmother. I was surprised to hear other characters, and ファン in this club, later repeating it as if it were gospel.

I've looked at different forms of magic within Once Upon A Time, trying to determine their price. For some, the price is clear. For others, I can only identify limitations rather than a price, または the price is theoretical または a bit of a stretch.

Dark Magic
* Dark magic, in general, has the price of being fuelled によって negative emotions such as pain, anger and hatred. This means that a person would have to feed these emotions to use dark magic.
* Dark magic can sometimes become addictive.
* Some forms of dark magic have a もっと見る specific price, such as the Dark Curse requiring the ハート, 心 of the person one loves the most, and both the double-sided Candle and the method to resurrect a Dark One requiring a death.
* Being the Dark One and accessing that dark magic has the price of being influenced/possessed によって that dark essence.
* The immortality which comes with being the Dark One could potentially be viewed as a price, since it would cause a person to outlive all their loved ones.
* Rumplestilskin's deals, in order for him to use his magic to help another, usually came at a price. However, on some occasions he did help Henry and Charming for free. He also often used his magic without any price, as did Dark Emma, Dark Hook and Zozo. This proves that Rumplestilskin's prices were his choice, his way of benefiting from his actions, rather than an inbuilt cost of the magic.

Light/Saviour Magic
* Emma once theorised that the price of being the Saviour was that, while she saved the happy endings of others, she couldn't get her own. However, this was disproved によって the end of season 6.
* A price of being the Saviour could be argued to be fighting and potentially dying in the Final Battle.
* Light magic in a もっと見る general sense, like the magic used によって Regina from the end of season 3 onwards, doesn't appear to have a price.
*The Apprentice's magic doesn't appear to have a price either.

True 愛 Magic
* This can only be utilised if a person shares true 愛 with someone else. However, such true 愛 isn't rare. Every healthy parent/child relationship should count, as possibly could other family relationships または maybe strong friendships. I also interpret romantic true 愛 as being a strong and genuine love, not necessarily a soulmate type connection, so romantic true 愛 shouldn't be that rare either.
* True 愛 kisses only break curses. They can't save someone from physical injury, illness, non-magical poisons または age.
* True 愛 kisses also can't break a curse which affects memory and causes the other person not to remember who they love.
* True 愛 kisses appear to only have a limited effect on the Dark One Curse. Belle kissed Rumplestilskin, causing his appearance to become もっと見る human temporarily, but later kisses had no effect on his magic または his darkness. Kisses between Emma and Killian had no effect when one または both of them was a Dark One.
* Sharing a ハート, 心 is unlikely to work between people who don't share true 愛 and could potentially kill the ハート, 心 donor if attempted.
* Sharing a ハート, 心 could also in future make one person die immediately when the other dies.
* Sharing a ハート, 心 can only work when done quickly after the person has died.
* Other forms of true 愛 magic, like ambrosia fruit, pixie dust identification and pixie flowers, don't appear to have a price.

Fairy Magic & Pixie Dust
* The fairies' celibacy and general distance from the world could be a price for their magic.
* Fairy magic is normally only used for the benefit of ヒーローズ and innocents.
* It is possible that fairy magic backfires when used for the benefit of a villain. When ティンカーベル tried to help Regina によって identifying her true love, she did so at the wrong time.
* 妖精 can lose their magic and their wings when they lose belief in themselves または when other people または 妖精 lose belief in them.
* Pixie dust can only be used to fly によって fairies, children または によって someone who has abandoned all adult responsibility.

Other Forms Of Magic
* Means of creating portals are rare. This means that they can have a high price, but it is not a price of the portal magic itself.
* Genie/wish magic appears to be a mixed picture. Despite the genie's claim in The フルーツ Of The Poison 木, ツリー that all 1001 wishes he'd previously granted had become corrupt, only 2 wishes shown have done so - Leopold's wish for the genie's freedom and the genie's own wish to never leave Regina's side. The other wishes - transferring the third wish to the genie, The Evil Queen's wish for Emma to have not been the Saviour, Regina's wish to be taken to the same place as Emma, Charming's wish for the Evil クイーン to have what she deserves, Jasmine's wish to be taken to Agrabah and her wish to save them all from drowning - had no such negative twist.
* The price of being a werewolf is losing control if the individual considers themself a monster and the risk of also losing control when out of practice.
*Turning into a dragon doesn't seem to have a price.
* Although the need to remain in Neverland after drinking the healing water is described as a price, I see it もっと見る as a limitation - that the healing effect is tied geographically.
* Squid ink doesn't have a price the majority of times it is used, other than Thomas' disappearance when it first featured, which was never fully explained.
*Being the 作者 has no price as long as the individual doesn't abuse the power and try to alter the story.

In conclusion, dark magic does appear to have a price at all times. Other forms of magic, however, are less consistent. They have a price in some cases but no price in other scenarios.
