Of all the great things about television, the greatest is that it’s on
. TV history is being made, day in and day out, in ways big and small. In an effort to better appreciate this history, we’re taking a look back, every day, at one particular TV milestone.
PROGRAM ORIGINALLY AIRED ON THIS DATE: The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: If you remember, the 2010 Emmys were poised to be a battle of television’s two newest, brightest, and buzziest comedies:
. There was a lot of debate around that time as to who would win the Outstanding Comedy Series award. Obviously, here in 2015, it easy to see how that shook out.
But when it came time for that year’s host, Jimmy Fallon, to put together an opening for the show,
The appeal of Fallon has always been his ability not just to draw celebrities close to him but also to convince them to perform, sometimes in a way that stretches their boundaries. And so it was that Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Joel McHale, Jorge Garcia, Jane Lynch, Nina Dobrev, Randy Jackson, and a quartet of
kids (Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Corey Monteith, and Amber Riley) ended up on stage in front of all of Hollywood, singing “Born to Run.” (Kate Gosselin was also there. Can’t forget that.)
If you’re not down with the Fallon thing, you probably find the above performance annoying, but I have always found it charming and silly and dorky and shaggy and all the best things about
. The young cast members mixed up with the veterans, all of them giving an honest effort to put on a show, and at the end, Edie Falco and Susan Sarandon and Mariska Hargitay and Julianna Margulies went nuts for them.
Watch it and allow some joy into your life.
