Rumors of a Stark Return Rise in the Smoke from Saintfield Battle Scene 

The filming of a large-scale battle continues to rage in Ireland, as work continues of

Season 6. It might seem somehow excessive to consider that the filming in this privately held swath of County Down is all for one large battle scene, but remember, filming the scene at Hardhome last year took weeks, with both

the director and Harington saying that due to the CGI heavy nature of the experience, they only got about a minute of usable footage a day. So it’s very possible this is one climatic battle that’s just taking a long time to film.

Either way, since fans can’t get close, the few pictures they’ve snapped cloud the picture more than they clear it.

And where there’s smoke, there are spoilery rumors. Some of which sound believable. And some would sound like wish fulfillment…if we hadn’t already heard rumors that corroborate them.

The twitter account above says that this battle they are filming is between “The Boltons” and “The Wildings.” Now that makes a kind of sense, and corresponds to things we’ve heard before. After all, at some point someone, somewhere needs to take out the Boltons. And if a certain Stark has risen from the dead, and (as we saw in pictures) was in receipt of the infamous “Pink letter,” his first move would be to ride south with the wildlings and take back Winterfell. (In fact, for those who never read the books, the tipping point for the Night’s Watch to bring down Jon Snow is that he learns from the pink letter that Ramsey Bolton has his sister—in that case it’s “Fake Arya” not Sansa, but since by the time he learns about either, both have long since escaped, that’s neither here nor there. The upshot is that he wants to take a host south to save her, which is the last straw for those who think he’s out of control.) If this rumor is true that this big battle they are filming is Boltons vs Wildlings, it sounds like the show will find a way to retrack to that plot line.

BUT! (And everyone loves a big but!) There’s another, more freaky rumor going around as well. Some seem to suggest it’s in relation to this battle, and some are just saying it’s a thing that will happen. The first word of it came from Reddit, as we heard that “

This same report says this battle is also Boltons vs Wildlings, but goes on to say the Wildlings are allied with the Karstarks, and the Umbers, plus the remaining sellswords from Stannis’ army.

And Irish Thrones reports that there is another possibility for that Stark who is killed in the “very shocking battle.” It’s not one from the younger generation. In fact, it is none other than the Stark those murdering Night’s Watchmen promised poor Jon information about.

Could it be BenJen who dies in the”very shocking battle?” Does that mean that the Northern host are taking on the Boltons, and then the white walker host, led by the Night’s King shows up, with BenJen? What “vengeance” could they be having? On the Boltons for how the treated Sansa? On the Night’s Watch for killign Jon? (Seriously, if I rose from the dead, I’d be all about vengeance on the Night’s Watch. Also note that the Northern side doesn’t mention Night’s Watch as being part of their alliance.) Or maybe on the white walkers for all those they have killed and turned into wights?

What can it all mean?! It doesn’t sound like we’ll know until the smoke clears…

This just in! Benjen returns from 5 seasons of death, only to die immidiatly! Not buying it. I wouldn’t rule out his return, but that’s just heeping one highly speculative rumor on top of another. If Benjen were to return, I would like to see him stick around for more than 5 fricken minutes before dying again. How about a season 7 or 8 death for Benjen? How about he helps Jon establish himself as a force/king/prophet/God/hero/whatever for a while? It just seems to anticlimatic to store BS away for 5 seasons just to kill him immediately. It would be poor storytelling imho. He survives without assistance behind the fricken wall for God knows how long against wildlings, walkers, and God knows what else just to be slain by The Bastard of Twenty Good Men instantly? With Sansa’s history of victimization, I can see her getting killed in the melee.

Remember that Martin has told the show’s writers the outline of the ending, that is he has told them who makes it to the end-game and who does not, and they have promised to stick with that plan. Now at the end of season 5 nearly everyone is where they were going in the books, though they got there a lot faster I am glad to say. The one person who cannot be put back on the book track is Sansa, from which you know that she is irrelevant to the ending. i.e. doomed

Fwiw, there was a “spoiler” posted on Reddit about a month ago by a fairly infrequent poster who sounded like he might just have been a bit of a troll, but the gist of it was that Jon comes back as a Walker and leads an army of Stark Walkers. He claimed to have some info from a friend working with HBO in Belfast. So who knows. It would fit with the theory suggested in this post I guess. Just happy to ponder Benjen scenarios.

Tinfoil speculation – Jon Snow dies on a battlefield and then Mel uses shadow magic to bring him back and Ramsey Bolton and his 20 good men shit their pants.

Mel left Stannis when she looked closer into the flames and saw the burning heart banners on Winterfell had a direwolf in the heart not a stag.

I hate to say it, but if they bring back Snow just to kill him again by the Boltons, than the show is predictable. GRRM and D&D all say they love being unpredictable and against the whole “hero” story. Because of that though, they are very predictable. You knew the Red Wedding was about to happen(BTW never read the book or spoilers and guessed it after he killed Karstark), you knew Myrcella was doomed, and that Oberyn would lose. The shock value they enjoy makes the show way too predictable. Oh, and Emilia Clarke’s acting still ruins the Mereen scenes for me. Thank goodness for Jorah, Messendei, Tyrion, and Daario. She just doesn’t have charisma on camera. BTW, please let the Stark that’s killed in battle be Rickon or Benjen. PLEASE don’t whack Snow again.

A group of Night’s Watch, led by Alliser, stab Jon to death. They turn and walk away, leaving Jon’s body lying on the ground. We know what happens to dead bodies when they’re not burned, right?

What Alliser has done – murder – is a serious crime for which the punishment must be death. He’s protected himself somewhat by letting others take stabs at Jon; those accomplices will not talk! Alliser must have a plan to avoid punishment. Does he intend for Jon to zombify and then be killed again – burned this time? Does he raise an alarm and frame others for the murder? Does he frame the Wildlings? Does Jon zombify and walk out of Castle Black unseen which will allow Alliser to claim he’s deserted?

If Jon is resurrected in another way – Melisandre saying words – then his death will release him from his vows, surely. If death can’t release him, then what can? A re-animated Jon will be free to return to Winterfell.

Jon’s made friends among the Wildlings who owe him their lives. I can see a re-animated Jon leading them into battle. Where would Jon’s army get horses and weapons? How Benjen might fit into all this, I can only wonder.

If Jon turns into a Wight-Walker, would he be like the others we’ve seen before? Will a living-dead Jon be guided by a different force? Would Jon be a counterpart to the Night’s King, able to control the dead – but for good? Who knows?

I can’t wait to see how the writers handle it all. There are so may ways they could take this.

The only ones who have come back have been killed by walkers/wights. This is not “The Walking Dead”. Lol

From the show perspective, I have no emotional attachment to Benjen, the character. He’s had very little screen time. Show watchers don’t know who he is, as a man. Why would it upset them if someone, they barely know, dies.

I also agree with this. Nobody remembers who Benjen is, this his death would have no emotional impact or significance. This is a large reason why it wouldn’t make sense to kill him instantly. Same goes for Rickon. I agree with the Sansa dies prospect. George even stated a long time female character will die in Winds. I think this character will be sansa

For the Record… I don’t want ANY Starks to die this season… BUT:

The Unsullied Audience likely has little attachment to Rickon or Benjen due to their lack of screen time and active plotlines in the show. Sullied readers have more invested and more theories about the importance of these characters.

If GoT is to utilize them and get the audience involved with their journeys… there will need to be some screen time invested in them. Now this could be done in a short period of time, we’ve seen it with characters like Karsi, where powerful attachments were developed in a brief number of scenes. But I generally agree that bringing in Benjen and/or Rickon back from obscurity just to kill them in Season 6 would be kind of a waste and very anticlimatic.

On the flip side, Audiences have been invested in Sansa since season 1. Her death would be much more potent than Rickon or Benjen’s simply from a storytelling perspective.

I think Benjen already dead. But Rickon was held in reserve. Investment in Another Stark has to begin before the most invested Stark is cashed in.

As to bringing Benjen back, Bran’s visions of young Ned could help remind viewers of Ned’s little brother and make his reappearance after 5 seasons less jarring.

Maybe he’s made an important discovery about the White Walkers and/or maybe Bran encounters him in the far north?

I would say there is zero chance that Benjen is the Stark that is killed unless he is already dead and Jon kills with wight version of BS. Otherwise, its going to be Rickon more than likely killed by the Karstarks for revenge or Sansa less likely killed by Ramsey. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I actually have a friend that’s an extra. It’s very illegal for them to disclose information, and he wouldn’t tell me which Stark dies(and it’s after the battle). He did put the quotations in “Stark” though, b/c I begged him to let me know in a discreet way if Jon was the one. He replied “Stark”…read the hinties…not the Drag. What I got out of it was not a dragon(targaryen)(JON), but a Stark. Now, he spills the beans like every other extra after some drinks ;-), and he said the battle will be bittersweet, but very very sweet. I believe Rickon dies, because the actor was seen wearing light armor and a weird helmet, and one of the wolves is responsible. I also believe that he was implying that Ramsay dies at the hands of Jon.

I’ll say this…its just rumors…just wait and see when the new season starts. Can’t wait!! Winter is Coming…

If Benjen appears in the first episode and dies in the 9th episode of the season, it’s ok. It would be a little upsetting, but it would be better than watching either of the Stark children die.

What if the battle in which Benjen supposedly dies is in episode 9 or 10 and he is reintroduced in episode 2 or 3 and gets a lot of screen time with a decent story arc? Time to explain what happened to him, time for him to put some things in motion such as restoring the Stark household and making moves on the Boltons? This is possible, at least, and it would be more realistic then having him re-introduced in the same episode that he is killed off.

tinfoil hat time – IF Rickon and Benjen showed up together (wtf!?) and Rickon dies, maybe that means a new direwolf for Sansa. After all what is a Stark without their pup?

I am skeptical of a surprise Rickon/Benjen save the day battle, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still postulate!

Postulate to your heart’s content – I mean really, that’s what we’re all doing. None of has a crystal ball, just a cupboard full of tinfoil hats that we happily don every day to discuss the latest rumors and theorize what could potentially happen. The great thing about GRRM is that he weaves so many threads that virtually ANY plot twist is feasible and virtually any character can be the catalyst for setting a new series of events in motion…

…for all we know (and please people, the following is intended solely to show how easily a speculative thread can be woven), IF Rickon is the Stark that dies in that battle, and IF Jon is also at the battle, you could even postulate that that in itself could be the catalyst for Azor Ahai’s rebirth; say Rickon is terribly wounded (i..e, by Ramsay) and suffering, and Jon (hopefully after dispatching Ramsay in a most spectacular and gruesome fashion) chooses to mercifully end his beloved brother’s pain via Longclaw; bingo – Rickon is Jon’s Nissa Nissa, Longclaw becomes Lightbringer and the PTWP is born (or reborn…or…well, reborn again, or…well, you get the idea).

Unlikely? Yes. But impossible? No – factually, it’s entirely plausible and possible. That’s the truly fun part of what GRRM has created – ANYTHING is possible – and it’s what keeps us fans hooked and postulating like mad until our tinfoil hats are so hot you could cook a burrito on them…

Having said that, just for the sake of discussion – It’s an interesting thought you bring up regarding Rickon’s potential death and whether his wolf could conceivably become Sansa’s.

The assumed premise (by me at least) until now has been that each wolf ‘s personality is tied to that of their Stark, and their fates are aligned. Nymeria leading a ferocious wolfpack mirrors Arya’s ongoing quest for vengeance, Grey Wind shared Robb’s fate, and Sansa’s Lady was gentle and sweet (like Sansa herself), ultimately dying as an innocent and powerless victim of the powerful people around her.

Rickon’s Shaggydog, on the other hand, is fierce and wild and almost uncontrollable, which may give an indication as to Rickon’s future personality as he grows up, and perhaps could foreshadow a foolish or impulsive act by Rickon at the battle that could lead to his death.

Should Rickon die and Shaggydog adopt / bond with Sansa, it could easily be seen as the ultimate symbol of Sansa shedding her childhood personality of innocence and passivity and evolving into a much stronger, darker and proactive adult (which we’re already seeing hints of in both the books and GoT).
