its "misunderstood" actually... and i think he was, would you grow up to be a...naruto...if the one friend you had turned on you! i always picture naruto turning the same way if iruka had not said those words at the beginning of the story!

The boy was pretty much abused and feared by his entire village. His ass of a father was the reason this happened, basicly, and he scorned Gaara for it. When his uncle betrayed him, and at such a young age, he snapped. He finds his way out of this later.

Loads of people die in this show anyway, whether Gaara is there to finish them off or not.
