It obviously depends on the fanfictions, but I've run into a few (one author in particular), that is much better than the original.

Fan fiction often has a happier ending, or an ending more to your liking anyway, but the original is generally better written imo. If it wasn't better written, I don't think I'd like it enough to be looking for fan fiction based on it.
