maryksand picked Pocahontas and Eric:
Imo Ariel would never fall for a jerk like Smith, at least not the way he was in the beginning of the movie (and in all honesty I really didn't buy into his sudden personality change that happened due to the fact that some girl sang him a song about the colors of the wind and he suddenly changed his entire mentality in few seconds, including his prejudices against all the people and cultures that were different from him and his willingess to kill any of them because he considered them "Savages" unable to accept them and wanting to posess their lands, which he siddenly decided to not posess after said song and suddenly realized that "savages" were actually lovely people and nice folks who talk to spirits and trees and he even talked to a tree himself, because apparently it was supposed to define his character development that was so unnatural and unconvincing.) Ariel is the complete opposite of Smith and she isn't the type of personality to fall for opposites, in fact, opposite opinions often annoy and irretate her and provoke rebellious reactions in her. She fell for Eric because she related to him, to the fact that despite being privileged like her he was very down to earth and nice and his friendship with his dog Max probably reminded her of her and Flounder and I think what made her completely into him was his heroic act when the ship started burning during the storm and he still came back for Max. She fell for his noble nature, she would never fall for a nature of a jerk like the one Smith had.

Pocahontas and Eric could be lovely, they are both great.

PociandSmith picked Ariel and John Smith:
maryksand, Ariel would fall for everyone if he was handsome. She did not know about Eric's personality and yet she became a human for him, so your point is kind of...false. I don't see how Smith is the opossite of her, in fact all that Ariel wanted was to be a human next to a hot man, Eric in this case. Smith did a heroic action, too, saving Thomas.

Anyway, I did not pick based on personality but only based on the photo. So, Ariel and Smith are perfect together, I have not thought about it before...

maryksand picked Pocahontas and Eric:
^ I disagree. Ariel did not become human FOR Eric, first and foremost, because she dreamt of being a part of the human world long before she even saw AND saved Eric. She collected things and explored the human culture despite her father's prejudices even in the TLM series and also for the whole first part of the movie, before meeting Eric, and she sang "Part of that world" before falling for him, dreaming of being "where the people are". When she fell for Eric, she got to witness him doing things that defined him as a person, such as being nice and down to earth despite his privileged status, saving his dog at the risk of his own life, not buying into all the over the top serious and formal stuff such as the statue that Grimsby gave him as a present. She indeed considered Eric handsome but there was also a number of qualities that she fell for.

I agree that John Smith saved Thomas and it was pretty noble, but he didn't risk the way Eric did and he was far more self centered than Eric in all his goals and aspirations and Ariel definitely wouldn't like it.

Also how can we know that Ariel would fall for "everyone" who is handsome when she only ever fell for ONE person in her life and it was Eric. I'm pretty sure she met a lot of handsome guys under the sea (in fact, she did in the series), but she didn't fall for any of them and in addition to that Ariel always disliked and was annoyed/irretated by obnoxious attitude so I really don't see her falling for Smith, at least not the way he was for the most part of the first movie. Smith was incredibly prejudiced and was completely unwilling to accept different cultures and different mentality, considering everyone who wasn't like him a "savage", which is very similar to Triton's attitude about humans and theway he used to discriminate all of them labeling them as "Barbaric" without even putting any real effort into getting to know them or their world. Ariel, on the other hand, always rebelled against prejudices. She and Smith are fundamentally different. Imo, obviously.
