Uh, it sounds like he might be interested in you. :) If he didn't like you, または want to be around you, then why did he walk with あなた to lunch または choose to be around あなた in health class? I would say, 次 time he walks with you, または is around あなた at all, try to talk to him. Say "hi" and start up some small talk. Who knows? He could end up liking you. :}

And, to your last 質問 there, I don't think it's awkward for him. I mean, he's the one who chose to stand 次 to you, and walk with you, right? The only reason why it could've been awkward is that everything was all in silence. Try to talk to him a bit. :) Maybe he's around あなた like that because he wants to get to know you. :) And, yeah, I think he could like you. :) It sounds like he was trying to be playful with あなた there when あなた were going to put your markers back (playfulness = flirting! <3)
