i love both of them so much, i know it's crazy to compare dawn to willow but it's really close to a tie! but since willow is part of my top 5 females and dawn is not, i must go with will. love both though!!!!!
It's not anti-Dawness as much as pro-Willowness. I think I'm due for an essay as I am a Dawn supporter.
Willow's character has far and away more growth than Dawn's and for the entire series it can be argued that the character's who best complete the Hero's journey are Willow, Xander, Spike, Anya, Cordelia, and Wesley (going into Angel on those two). The character of Willow began as a very self-concious girl who tried to blend in but she emerges as an individual who is comfortable with her sexuality and confident. We even have magic by which to gage her self worth and confidence within herself. Willow is a character who grows and transforms and at times we hate what she is doing but still love her because we are invested in her life.
Dawn on the other hand is introduced more as a plot device than anything else and in the beginning we feel cheated that we are supposed to accept this character and care about her. By the end of Bargaining I am a full Dawn supported but her character only had three seasons in which to gain back our trust in her very existance (as a character, not a key) make us care for her and develop her facets. Dawn never varies to far from the middle and that makes her somewhat boring.
I always liked Dawn, but Willow is my all time favorite female character. She's funny and nice and the reason I watched "American Pie". I liked that movie too, but not the last three squeals.
