Julie Hesmondhalgh gave a powerful performance as rape survivor Trish Winterman in
\'s final series, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at last night\'s BAFTA TV Awards.
star said that the series was making an important point about sexual violence by casting her as the victim, as it\'s so often portrayed gratuitously or as an act of desire – and through the eyes of the perpetrator, rather than the survivor.

"For me, that\'s what culture and art\'s about, and television especially because it\'s so democratic and it\'s in everybody\'s homes and people experience things happening to characters that they care about and it opens up things for them."
