24 Revival: 狐, フォックス Orders Pilot for New Series Featuring a New 'Jack' 

, albeit sans original star Kiefer Sutherland.

The network announced on Friday that it has ordered a pilot for

, a potential new series that will feature an “all-new cast of characters” yet retain the “real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and complex interweaving storylines” of the original.

According to Fox, the project will center on a military hero who encounters a troubled return to the U.S., compelling him to ask CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil. I’m told the hero in question (aka the ‘new Jack Bauer’) will be African-American; casting is currently underway.

“There’s a time jump, a new organization, a completely different story,” said Fox co-chairman and CEO Dana Walden at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena. “It’s a contemporary story about the potential to activate sleeper cells in the United States. There are nods in the pilot to prior CTU agents, but no ongoing characters.”

The new series would span 12 episodes, similar to the recent, acclaimed limited series.

Although there was buzz that Sutherland might make a guest appearance in the new series, such stunt casting seems unlikely now that he’s attached to star in ABC’s upcoming conspiracy thriller

There is no way 24 will be the same without Kiefer Sutherland — unnless they cast Matt Damon is that role — and the chances of that are slim and none.

Jeremy Renner might have been a great choice because he has been good supporting actor in other big action film franchises, it might be good to give him a lead role.

Cool. Given that Jack’s still in a Russian gulag this is fine. Hopefully a future season can focus on his rescue.

24 will be an epic fail without Jack Bauer and Keifer Sutherland.

For years now people have requested that Tony replace Jack as lead. If that’s acceptable, why can’t a new character? I for one hope they pick up from where the short episode with Tony in prison left off.

I agree. Without Keifer Sutherland it’s a leap of faith that some fans won’t be prepared to take. The only other way of getting around that is in the first 30 minutes kill off Jack Bauer.

Killing Jack Bauer will be game over.

That’s my question ! How are they going to handle that? Current fans are going to want an answer. I like the idea of a rescue of Jack! :)

I think that works great for like year three or something. Ever seen Gulag, in which David Keith and Malcolm McDowell escape from a Russian Gulag? Imagine THAT, but instead of a two hour movie it can be an intricate escape that unfolds over a period of 12 hours.

Of course, and this would be fairly obvious, with Jack in a Gulag, Fox has the perfect excuse to do a crossover with Prison Break. Send Michael and Lincoln to the Gulag and have them team up with Bauer to break free.

24 reboot could work. Concept holds water no matter who is in the driver’s seat, although Kiefer Sutherland was a gift to the producers and made the original a great success. Am sure there is another handsome charismatic talented leading man in Hollywood who can take the hits.

I won’t be watching unless they get someone maybe like Tom Beringer, he would be a great replacement. Got to be someone that has played that type of character in maybe movies or a series before. If not it won’t make it.

I can’t remember his name, but the lead of Human Target would be a fine replacement. He’s already shown proven action creds! :)

24 without Jack Bauer is like Avengers without Capt America. Ain’t watching.

Great news!! Love the concept and even though Jack Bauer will always be the heart of 24 there’s no reason why it can’t be done with another lead. Although that person does have some pretty big shoes to fill.

Well his race shouldn’t matter. Keifer Sutherland’s shoes are some big ones to fill, No matter if the lead is black or white. I’m going to give it a shot simply because they are keeping Gordon as producer, who produced the first 24 iteration, and the 90’s La Femme Nikita, which was a great show. They may even keep the same writers, which means same format and everything. Sutherland made the show, but he wasn’t the only one holding it up.

Here’s an idea TV Execs…Why don’t you fire your staff of writers and hire some people with some imagination and stop revive stuff that we have already seen.

The problem is the TV execs and what they decide to pick up not the writers. Prison Break, 24 reboots are clearly driven by the execs wanting to keep the franchises going in some fashion.

Wasn’t Yvonne Strahovski’s character supposed to be a younger Jack Bauer type?? Why not just cast her. All for equal opportunity casting… But I was already under the assumption they had a logical successor…

Boo hit the nail on the head. I’m a die-hard 24 fan too. Kiefer IS Jack Bauer. How insulting to your many fans you are trying to appease by calling it 24 and gutting the cast. How lame is creativity today?

Call it CLOCK or SECONDS or THE DAY or ANOTHER DAY but please don’t insult our intelligence and call it 24. I thought Howard & Manny et el were smarter than that.

Totally agree! Jack Bauer IS 24. If you give it a new lead with a new cast, then Give it a new name. If touted right, execs will still capture the same Jack Bauer loving 24 market share. We will however not respond so well if they call it Santa and give us the Easter Bunny.

Let’s all give it a shot before dismissing it. Lord knows it can’t be worse than Heroes Reborn.

I am an authentic, original and “fan-for-life” of the television series 24. The essential equation is the following: NO Keifer Sutherland = No 24, Period! The new show will fail notwithstanding the participation of the original 24’s executive producers.

AMEN!! and AMEN again!!!!! I never missed an episode of 24, but I will NOT be watching this. Bring back Kieffer or Bury the series.

I read about this news on TVLine first but have seen some other reports since then. Here, it sounds like you’re saying the lead will definitely be an African-American male but on another site they’re reporting CEO Dana Walden said, “The character was originally conceived as being a diverse actor … We wanted it to be as different from Jack Bauer as possible and that was the original thinking behind having this be a diverse lead. Whether that’s African-American or Latino actor, we’ve been really excited by some of the people we’ve been seeing throughout our internal process.” Can you please clarify?

FOX seems to be going real heavy on reboots of their old franchises. It’s amazing they can’t develop more than one original drama at a time to build their schedule up. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them reboot another hit drama like House.

24 is a fantastic series by far. But with out Sutherland it just won’t work out. Just leave the series to its end with Jack finally getting caught and headed off to Russia!

I totally agree with you there. Almost Human was a really good show as well. What happened with that. I will give 24 a chance but without Kiefer Sutherland…it definitely will never be the 24 we all tuned in faithfully to watch.

Actually a lot of people liked the limited series in russia and it was so good i’ve been waiting for a reboot this whole time and this x files and prison break and a new 24 I’ll give it a one episode chance but I know it’s not gonna be as good as the original 24. Scream queens was like that but that show did so good it got the 2nd best show on fox and has a second season taking place in a hospital.
