film, and has set David Lowery to direct a script that he will write with Toby Halbrooks. They teamed to write and Lowery directed
, a new version of Disney’s 1977 live action/animated musical. It will be the second effort in the family film space for Lowery, who was best known for writing and directing the edgy indie

Disney might as well reclaim the J.M. Barrie work about the boy who would not grown up; it was the focus of its successful 1953 animated film. Many other studios have made their own versions on the big and small screen, including Steven Spielberg’s star-studded
which didn’t work out well for Warner Bros. Lowery is separately working towards directing Robert Redford in
, which Lowery adapted from the David Grann The New Yorker article about an aging thief who in the 1980s knocked off a lot of banks in throwback style and became a folk hero outlaw.
This becomes another strong project for Disney’s live-action division, run by Sean Bailey, which has generated its own list of family-themed blockbusters from past Disney properties and theme park attractions and some originals. It doesn’t get the ink accorded to sister silos Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm, but it has gotten results that should continue with the upcoming Jon Favreau-directed
which is already slated to develop a sequel. The division has a Tim Burton-directed
which directors Joachin Ronning and Espen Sanberg have wrapped.

Then you’re either Joe Wright or Greg Berlanti!
Christ, can’t they do Bedknobs and Broomsticks or the Aristocats before they beat this dead horse again?
BEDKNOBS!!!!! As a non-musical ‘Harry Potter’-like WWII era fantasy ala Narnia with MAYBE one cover of a song from the original movie (like these other Disney remakes seem to do) would DEFINITELY be a crowd-pleaser
Sean Bailey has such wonderful original ideas like his Tron sequel that lost $80 million
I am in the minority for loving PAN. I think it’s way too soon for a new PP flick. Would rather see the Tower of Terror movie onscreen.
Really? ANOTHER Peter Pan movie? When are studios going to realize people, honestly, don’t care about this story anymore?
When people stop going they will stop making them, but until then, enjoy them. YOU may not care but there are people who do, stop complaining and move on. This movie will sell boatloads of merchandise.
You do realize that there are billions upon billions of people who don’t know who Peter Pan is? It’s a timeless story and deserves to be retold to new generations.
I think people do care. My kids love this book. There just hasn’t been a great live action movie. Glad Disney is finally making one!
Exactly. Those saying it should be made because it is a timeless story or whatever don’t get that there are enough Peter Pan movies for people to already watch to get the story. The problem is in our increasingly instant-only age of Snapchat and social media feeds, people don’t care about looking for movies made before three years ago and everything has to be remade or “rebooted” to reach new audiences.
Such a wide swath of development going on, and yet the only filming news I hear out of Disney lately is about Marvel and Star Wars.
So… Disney wants to lose tons of money. Interesting.
The world is not just the U.S. any more its China, Europe, Asia, Americas, beside that Box Office is just one small part of the equation. There’s MERCHANDISING this movie will make money over all. And remember this is Disney, not one of the other Hollywood studios, when their merchandising machine cranks up there is no problem printing money. I’ll bet this is a good Holiday movie, just in time for all those toys.
No. More like they’re in the process of showing Warner Bros the door. And they will succeed where WB & everyone else failed. Count on it
They’re going to sell billions of dollars of Tinkerbell toys and daggers. And with David Lowery, the movie will be great.
Actually excited about this. Heard Pete’s Dragon is beautiful.
They need to do another Tron. But do it right. There’s too much potential to just shelf it.
It really bugs that a third Tron was canceled yet all these live-action fairy tales are being made. From Maleficent to Snow White and the Huntsman, all these movies look alike.
Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is one of my all time favorites. Can’t wait to see this.
Wish they would revisit adapting Peter and the Starcatchers.
Such a great book series with sequels already written!
Was lucky to go to an early screening of Petes Dragon. It’s awesome. I bet this will be also.
Thank God someone is making ANOTHER Peter Pan film. Should be a federal law that requires one a year until Hollywood falls into the fault. Come up with some new material!
And with each passing year, the prospects of a film version of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER slip further and further away. Christian Borle will have to play Hook in a wheelchair.
A good Peter Pan? That could work.
Actually pretty psyched about this. Big fan of Lowery’s work on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.
Please, please, puh-leeeeze don’t cast a girl as Peter!
Well, I do love that Pete’s Dragon trailer…
