Pola Negri (1897-1987) rose from an impoverished childhood in Warsaw, Poland, to become one of early Hollywood\'s greatest stars. After tuberculosis ended her career as a ballerina in 1912, she turned to acting and worked under legendary directors Max Reinhardt and Ernst Lubitsch in Germany. Negri preceded Lubitsch to Hollywood, where she quickly became a fan favorite thanks to her beauty, talent, and diva personality. Known for her alluring sexuality and biting artistic edge, she starred in more than sixty films and defined the image of the cinematic femme fatale. Author Mariusz Kotowski brings the screen siren\'s story to English-speaking audiences for the first time in this fascinating biography. At the height of her fame, Negri often portrayed exotic and mysterious temptresses, headlining in such successes as The Spanish Dancer (1923) and Forbidden Paradise (1924), before returning to Europe in the 1930s. The devastating effects of World War II soon drove her back to the United States, where she starred in Hi Diddle Diddle (1943) and pursued her vaudeville career before retiring from the entertainment industry. Kotowski also illuminates Negri\'s dramatic personal life, detailing her numerous love affairs-including her engagement to Charlie Chaplin and her romance with Rudolph Valentino-as well as her multiple marriages. This long-overdue biography not only paints a detailed portrait of one classic Hollywood\'s most intriguing stars and the film industry\'s original Jezebel, but also explores the link between Hollywood and European cinema during the interwar years.

While it is apparent that the author is truly smitten with Pola Negri and seems to be sincere, there were too many errors. Number 1, John Barrymore was 60 years old and died in the hospital, not as the author said 37 and died at home. I do beleive the author mixed up Barrymore and John Gilbert. Number 2, Ina Claire was a famous stage actress and did not have a Brooklyn accent, agin author might have mixed up Ina Claire and Clara Bow. Number 3, The author states that "Gretchen" Young, daughter of Lorretta Young supported Mae Murray in her time of need. Lorretta\'s was born Gretchen and her daugher\'s name was Judy. As Judy was a child at the time, I hardly think she was supporting anyone let alone Mae Murrary. It is a fact that Lorretta did give some money to Ms. Murrary at one time but that is hardly supporting her.
Searching for references in the back of the book, the author seems to haved relied on interviews and movie magazines for many of it sources althoughthe author also had access to Ms.Negri\'s papers in Texas and Pola\'s autobiography as well.
I am trully astounded that a reliable publisher let this book get through. When people pay good money for a biography they the reasonable expectations that the book be accurate.

Very incisive look into the life of a most provocative actress. I had friends who knew her while she lived in San Antonio. They have shared some of their stories with me and some of her memorabilia. In fact, I read a letter from her to Rudolph Valentino. That would make the NY Times best seller\'s list. Bravo! for bringing this mysterious and steamy life to the public.

Kotowski biography of Negri draws from various sources including newspapers, celebrity, magazines, and letters. He paints a comprehensive picture of a woman who was mysterious and who loved finery but was extremely generous and down to earth. This biography is complete with her filmography, discography, and stage works, a chronology and numerous images of the late, great Pola Negri. Polish American Journal / Mary Lanham
