10 Things to Know About \'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter\'

IMDb attended the \'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter\' panel at New York Comic Con where director Paul W.S. Anderson was joined by the movie’s stars — Milla Jovovich (Alice), Ali Larter (Claire Redfield), William Levy (Christian), and Eoin Macken (Doc) — to discuss the final installment in the franchise, which premieres Jan. 27, 2017. Here are 10 things we learned at the panel. —

While Milla Jovovich joked that the story could always be extended, Anderson assured the audience in attendance that they should take the title literally and that this will be the end of the series. “This is the conclusion,” he said. “We’re bringing it full circle, it’s coming back to where it all began, and all the questions that have been hanging over the franchise … are all going to be answered in this movie.”

Paul W.S. Anderson reveals why this video game-based film franchise actually worked.

Paul W.S. Anderson had some blunt words to say about filmmakers who are adapting video games to film. “This movie was made by people both in front of and behind the camera who genuinely adored the video game. And we knew what it was,” he said. “I’m still shocked when people adapt video games and the filmmakers go, ‘Well I’ve never saw the game I’ve never played the game.’ The level of hubris involved in that… No one would ever dream of adapting

War and Peace without reading the book. But somehow it’s OK to make a video game movie without knowing really what the fans love about the video game — and I think that’s really why some of these adaptations fail.” Jovovich, clearly amused by her husband’s response, said: “You are going to get ripped apart tomorrow!”

Loose ends will be tied up and lingering questions will be answered.

With this being the end, fans are going to need closure with the franchise that began way back in 2002. “It’s a return to the very beginning of the franchise, it’s a return to Raccoon City — or what’s left of it after we dropped a bomb on it in the second movie. It’s a return to The Hive where everything began for Alice,” Anderson said. “And it’s also a voyage of discovery for the Alice character … and this is the movie where we discover the truth about her and the truth about the Umbrella Corporation.”

Anderson promises the movie has more emotion than you might think.

Resident Evil movies have delivered throughout the years, there you might want to bring some tissues with you to the theater for this one. “It’s also a very emotional movie,” Anderson admitted. “Even I kind of tear up at the end of the movie. This movie is going to have a level of emotional engagement that I think most people wouldn\'t necessarily assume would come with a Resident Evil film.”

Coming back to play Alice is something Jovovich always looked forward to.

Jovovich was asked if she prefers a big dialogue scene over a scene full of stunts and the 40-year-old actress seemed to lean toward action sequences over a lengthy speech — but noting that she has both. “I love the action,” she said. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ll do my little bits of Shakespeare outside of this movie, but it’s always nice to get back in my Alice shoes and, like, kick some ass.”

This movie will return to the horror elements the first installment had.

For those of you hoping to get some major frights from this last addition to the series, you’re in luck. Anderson said there are some “really, really scary scenes” and even Jovovich said that watching scenes back scared her — even though she knew what was coming. “People wanted a return to the kind of scariness and the horror that was in the very first movie in the franchise. That was all set in one location and had a kind of claustrophobic intensity to it,” Anderson explained. “So this movie kind of alternates between some big kickass action scenes and also, I think, some of the most terrifying stuff I’ve put on the screen in my career.”

Jovovich was immediately drawn to making movies about zombies.

Jovovich said that she’s loved existing in a world with supernatural beings and that it has changed, not only her life, but the entertainment industry as well. “I love zombies now. I have nightmares about them. They\'re a part of my life,” she said. I remember when we did [the first film] nobody would touch a zombie movie — and that was part of the appeal to me. To see how people have embraced the undead since 2002 it\'s beautiful how much it opened up this whole world for everybody that had been undiscovered for so many years.”

Jovovich talks having played characters completely unlike herself in her career.

When it comes to her body of work, Jovovich is proud of having played a diverse group of characters — all of which have been completely unlike herself. “I\'ve been so lucky to play iconic characters in my career and something I learned from Leeloo (

The Fifth Element) and something I was reminded of again actually with Alice … is the fact that sometimes as an actor you have to leave yourself at the door and allow the character speak with their own voice. Some people make a career out of playing themselves and I\'ve made a career out of completely not playing myself and playing other characters. That, to me, is so liberating in a way to leave yourself behind and be able to let someone else speak through you.”

Get ready for some death scenes you’ll have to see to believe.

For a franchise to be wrapping up, Jovovich said that the pressure was on to deliver some insane death scenes for the characters in this canon. “We talked a lot about how so many action and horror films are defined by people’s death scenes and how you have to have a rad death scene in a movie. And I have to say, we have some killer death scenes. People die so crazy, gruesome, awful, but amazing!"

Resident Evil movies to a close presented him with a challenge to deliver something that would satisfy the loyal fans. “We felt a huge amount of pressure to kind of end the franchise with the best movie in the franchise and I really feel we’ve achieved that,” he said. “I’m super happy about that.”
