If he has never spoken to あなた he might not really know you
Look at it this way. If he would have 発言しました no he would be 与えられた a lot of crap
If he 発言しました yes he'd have to deal with people making a big deal of it and または teasing him
Its called being safe.

So あなた two have never spoken? How do あなた expect him to want to be your boyfriend if あなた never talk? And he probably called あなた his friend to be polite. He probably didn't want to say he didn't know you. Unless he likes you. There's always that "love at first sight" thing I guess.

my friend for some odd reason asked a guy if he liked me. (probably 'cuz she thought we looked cute together even though we'd never talked)
he 発言しました the same thing... and he never spoke to me... and we went to the same class for 3 years... :|
