All through One Direction\'s triumphant chart achievements, pop pandemonium and gruelling touring schedule across the world, Niall Horan always seemed like the one who was having the best time.

The smiley, cheeky Irish charmer took to international fame quite effortlessly, and fans all over the world loved him back. He has, what Louis Walsh always likes to see in contestants on

Since 1D went on a break, the focus has been on Harry Styles\'s Hollywood career and Liam Payne\'s high-profile relationship with Cheryl, but in the background Niall has been putting all his attention into a solo project of his own. And do you know what? It sounds like it could be very, very good.

Niall Horan album release date: we might hear some new music in 2016?

Despite saying he was going to take a year out to travel and play golf following One Direction\'s hiatus in early 2016, Niall couldn\'t help himself and started work on brand new music. He first revealed that he had some ideas in the can as early as May 2016, but it wasn\'t until the summer that he secured himself a record deal.

And what a drama that turned out to be. Initially, it looked like Niall would stay faithful to 1D boss Simon Cowell and sign a contract with his record label Syco. "I think they\'re all gonna do great," Simon told People magazine in the US. "Niall is the most loyal. We are expecting to announce something soon with him. I\'ve always known he\'s loyal."

But it looked like Si spoke too soon, because within a few months it came to light that Niall had done a U-turn on his decision and inked a new deal with rival label Capitol Records instead. The story goes that the Universal company wanted Niall so bad after their deal with his bandmate Harry Styles fell through that they offered him quite a bit of money.

So with a record deal all wrapped up and apparently enough songs finished in the studio, there\'s nothing to suggest that Niall couldn\'t get the first taster of his solo material to fans in 2016. Digital Spy have been told that new music from the 1D charmer is due soon, but no specific timeframe was given. We just know that

is there, ready to send the 1D fandom into overdrive.

Niall Horan new album: what will it sound like?

If you ever went to a One Direction show, then you\'ll know that Niall always played the role of the musician in the group. He often went on stage with his acoustic or electric guitar, so he\'s had plenty of practice rocking it up in huge stadiums.

And it seems this more guitar-led style of music is what the Irish star has been focussing on. Early reports suggested that he is keen to step away from the boyband sheen of his One Direction years and move forward with a more singer-songwriter approach. Think of him as a blonde Ed Sheeran.

We know that he\'s been in the studio with pop guru Wayne Hector this year, who he previously worked with on big 1D songs like \'Best Song Ever\' and \'Steal My Girl\'. "We are writing together but he wants to do it for himself and not other people at the moment," Wayne said in May 2016. "We have no idea where we\'ll end up." In a later interview, the songwriter added: "Niall is really gifted musically and is a great guitarist." See, we said guitars would be involved.

But the most exciting piece of news came more recently: Niall has been in the studio with huge pop producer Greg Kurstin. He\'s previously worked with the likes of Adele, Sia and Katy Perry. "Niall wrote with One Direction but he\'s got a real talent, and the bosses are hoping to make the most of that by teaming him up with some brilliant people," an insider revealed. "He wants to move away from boyband stuff and show what he can do, and he\'s being doing some great work with Greg, among others."

So far we have one kind of confirmed song title, and that is \'Don\'t Give Up On Our Love\'. It sounds like an emotional rollercoaster just going by the name. Niall co-wrote the track with Jake Gosling and Chris Leonard, both of whom have previously written hits for the likes of Ed Sheeran, Paolo Nutini and James Bay.

Oh and we should address possibly one of the more outlandish rumours out there: Niall may have teamed up with Rihanna for a duet. How this has come about, we do not know, but the bookies have odds down as 11/4. We can\'t see it ourselves, but stranger things have happened in the world of pop.

Niall Horan tour and tickets: will he hit the road on his own?

As we\'ve already mentioned, Niall is quite the capable guitarist. So when it comes to a potential tour, you bet the Irish crooner will be taking to the stage, instrument in hand to melt hearts all over again.

But when, we hear you ask? If we\'re to look at traditional schedules when it comes to big music releases, if we get this Niall solo debut in 2016 like we\'re expecting, there\'s bound to be at least a run of headline shows in 2017. After all, live music is where the money is these days.

Whatever the case may be, multiple sources have branded Niall at One Direction\'s "secret weapon". Considering his huge profile in the US – where he is arguably the most popular 1D member – the cheeky chap could potentially come through as the real solo superstar.
