Marvel.com: Last season ended with some pretty big turns in Fitz and Simmons’ relationship. Going into the second year, how has that relationship changed?
Elizabeth Henstridge: I think that stuff has definitely changed between them. It kind of had to, because as soon as he confessed his love--and more importantly, when she didn’t confess it back--then it’s hard to come back from that. In a way, they’ve both got to figure out what they mean to each other, and she needs to figure out her feelings too. I don’t think that she saw that coming, and he’d obviously been building up to it. It was his moment, and then it wasn’t requited. So the dynamic’s going to change, and I think we’re going to see how Simmons identifies herself just as Simmons, not as FitzSimmons, and what kind of trouble that brings.
It’s a rebuilding for her within S.H.I.E.L.D. and what her role is. She put her life on the line before, but they were risking their lives every week for the belief in their team and the belief that they were doing something right and just. Whereas now, they’ve been betrayed so badly by a member of their team that she has to decide if she wants to stay and help rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. or if she’s kind of done. S.H.I.E.L.D. was a great concept, but in the end it wasn’t possible in this world that we live in now. She has a lot of growing and decisions to make.
Marvel.com: Last year, when the season started, you and Fitz hadn’t really had much field experience. But as the season went along, you guys obviously started going out on more and more missions. Is that something you think Simmons has now embraced at this point, the ability to potentially go out into the field, or is that still a nerve-wracking experience for her?
Elizabeth Henstridge: It’s definitely nerve-wracking for her still. I think there are different avenues in S.H.I.E.L.D., and she’s at the top of her game. But it takes a lot of years and thousands of hours to get to the point that she’s at, and it’s hard to just flip over to be a Melinda May character when she’s had all her training in science. Even if Simmons were to go down a more combat-focused route in the front lines, then she’d have to continue to do a lot of physical training. It’s something that she is definitely getting better at, but I think you’re either built that way or you’re not. Your instincts are either to fight or be scared, and I think her instincts now are still to be scared [more] than not.
Marvel.com: That’s a perfectly rational response. We also have a bunch of new faces coming on this season. From your perspective, how do you feel some of those new characters like Mack and Lance are changing the dynamics on the team? What’s it like having so many new faces on the set to interact with?
Elizabeth Henstridge: I love it. It’s so exciting to me that we get new people and new blood on the show to hang around with. Everybody that’s been introduced into the show is just a great actor and has an amazing work ethic. We’re so excited and lucky to have all these new people [who] have seen Season 1 and then want to join us. That’s kind of great that people are responding well to the show and are excited about what’s to come.
And for the characters, it’s brilliant. Every new character brings a different kind of conflict which just makes for good drama and good storylines. There’s going to be new friendships forming, and then there’s going to be some conflict with these new people coming in. I always think, the more the merrier. S.H.I.E.L.D. is rebuilding. Whereas last time, we were an isolated team, now we’ve got to work with who we can find, [so] there’s going to be a lot more people coming in and out [instead of] just focusing on the main six Agents. The six that were there last time are still all super close and love working with each other, but it’s always fun to have more people in the mix.
Marvel.com: One thing that I’m asking all of the returning cast is, after having experienced this character for the first year, what are some of the things that you personally are curious about or interested in exploring with Simmons this season?
Elizabeth Henstridge: I’m curious to see how she develops as an individual, and what that means to different relationships that she might be able to have on a platonic level and romantically now that she’s perhaps not as tied to Fitz as she once was. But I’m also curious about the relationship between her and Fitz because there’s so much love there, that this is an obstacle I hope they can get over. But I guess only time will tell. And I’m excited for her to continue her journey through assertiveness, because I think she started off very confident [but] quiet, and not necessarily confident as an independent person. I think this season will see her grow more into her assertive self.

After helping to thwart Hydra, Coulson was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency. This won’t be an easy job to accomplish with the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents either killed, secretly working for Hydra or free agents. Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot, martial artist and longtime friend, will continue to look after Coulson in the wake of the mysterious etchings he’s been carving into walls. What do these etchings mean, and can Coulson be trusted? Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, was found to be a Hydra mole and a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D. and locked up away from the world and his former teammates. But this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him… After being left to die in the middle of the ocean by Ward, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer, and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist, found a way to escape their watery grave. But all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions; a devastating blow to Simmons. And computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), now a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, discovered her origins as an 0-8-4 -- an object of unknown origin – and that her parents were considered “monsters.” Could Skye have darkness lying dormant inside of her? Also joining Coulson\'s core team is Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit. Since he didn\'t rise up through the ranks, does he have an ulterior motive for helping out the team? Who can Coulson trust? From Executive Producers Joss Whedon ("Marvel\'s The Avengers," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, "Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot co-writers ("Dollhouse," "Dr.Horrible\'s Sing-Along Blog"); Jeffrey Bell ("Angel," "Alias"); and Jeph Loeb ("Smallville," "Lost," "Heroes") comes Marvel\'s first TV series.
