Disney Animated Movies ‘Zootopia’ & ‘Moana’ Get Official Release Dates
There won’t be a new Pixar animated feature released in theaters before 2014 draws to a close, but the studio has two original projects (
) on the docket for 2015. Similarly, Walt Disney Animation Studios doesn’t have a new film scheduled to arrive next year, but in 2016 it will make up for that (so to speak) by unveiling a pair of original animated movies, in the forms of
(which was previously the project’s working title only) is being directed by Byron Howard (
). The story takes place in the fictional eponymous city, where (according to the official synopsis) a
cop end up having to work together, when both are targeted by a larger conspiracy; a Disney-animated buddy adventure, in other words.
It sounds as though Howard’s new Disney animated feature will veer close to the territory the Mouse House explored back in the 1980s with
, as it wrestles with issues of social prejudice (this time in a world where humans never existed) with a story about how
“even natural enemies can become best friends.”
offers a superhero(es) origin story with modern values (something other recent Disney ‘toons have had), so hopefully
will likewise find a way to put a relevant spin on its own familiar themes.
launches in theaters on March 4th, 2016. That’s the same date that Tim Burton’s
adaptation is slated to arrive, but the latter (a supernatural/fantasy tale) has a slighter older audience as its main target, compared to
(which will be appealing to more of a family demographic). Both should be able to carve out a decent-sized slice of box office pie.

to arrive on November 23rd, 2016; its competition during the 2016 Thanksgiving frame will include the
, which opens the preceding Friday. Animated films released under the Disney umbrella rarely fail to find an audience; given the filmmaking talent onboard,
is shaping up to be a good movie that can hold its own against a new Wizarding World adventure.

Hah — pretty sure “March 4th, 2106″ is supposed to read as “March 4th, 2016″ – only about a hundred years difference…
Also — Hooray for Disney representing Pacific Islanders!!
Nah – Disney just wants to stake out that release date WAY early.
(P.S. Thanks for the catch, it’s been corrected.)
That Zootopia film doesn’t sound very original, but Disney might surprise.
… now let’s get them to do Mexico after Moana comes out.
The artwork on “Moana” looks fantastic. I hope it is more Disney adventure/fantasy story similar to “Brave” or “How to train your dragon”. If “Frozen” has taught me anything, it is great musical numbers can make average films into a big hit.
Kids never get tired of talking animals, so no worries on return if they keep the costs down.
You know what would be really refreshing and new for a disney princess film? I would LOVE it if the Prince and the Princess were already together. Whether or not they let go of each other, strengthen their relationship, or end up hating each other, I think that’ll be a huge contrast to the stereotypes. I’d pay to d
Interesting projects with interesting artwork. Can’t wait!
Is Zootopia gonna be traditional 2D handrawn style or 3D CGI?
Because the concept art of Moana is in the second style but for Zootopia it’s the first.
I want to see more of the old style, though it’s time consuming and outdated.
I wouldn’t say 2D is outdated (it’s a art form after all), no more than say traditional painting is outdated compared to digital painting or 3D rendered images. It’s just a different style, that’s all. Just because Disney chose not to do it anymore doesn’t mean it’s no longer relevant.
Also, 3D is as much time consuming as 2D. I know, I’m doing it.
Wow! Disney doing traditional animation again is awesome. I love the traditional style so much more. Yet so few companies now use that style. Only Studio Ghibli does it anymore. So I really hope Zootopia and Moana do great for Disney. This way it leaves the door open for Disney to use 2D animation more. Moana looks like it will be a water colored film. Which makes sense seeing as the story will take place on the sea. Zootopia on the other hand looks like a popup storybook coming to life. So Disney gets my money and support. Because if these do well hopefully other companies will see 2D animation is still great to use.
Studio Ghibli, Madhouse, Studio 4°C and the rest of the japanese studios are still doing it. As well as a number of other studios in Europe and around the world…
Actually Moana is going to be a new style of 3D. Hope it’s good, I like the look from the image.
As for Zootopia, if the movie will be as depicted, I’ll be really joyous.
