It's not that I don't see the racial stereotypes in Disney movies but they just never bothered me. It wouldn't be fair if it did anyway, I find a lot of other racially offensive movies hilarious so...

Besides, some movies were bound to be blamed for racism, like Princess and the Frog.

I would really mind if Disney Movies were racist, but they aren't. I don't find The Princess and the Frog racist at all. Only the really old Disney Movies have some racist contents.

Manu962, not to ruin anything for you, but yes, many of the classic Disney movies are very racist. That includes movies like Peter Pan, Fantasia, and some others like Aladdin. I'm not trying to make you hate Disney, but a lot of the racism is indeniable. I do ignore it sometimes though, but other times I just can't ignore them.

i don't mean to be insensitive to things that could be offensive but I don't really THAT'S RACIST! when i see a disney movie. like Peter Pan for example with the stereotypical potrayal of native americans never bothered me or "what makes the red man red" i love that song. its fun. and the native american potrayals always made sense to me because neverland is made of a child's imagination and children when they think of natives say oh indians! plus they really aren't native Americans since they live in neverland... shrug. thought the crows in dumbo were coolio too

It really depends on what the content is.

I hesitate to label and get mad about "racist content," because sometimes racism is to the eye of the beholder. Take The Princess and the Frog: the first African American princess and a great role model to boot. Originally she was going to be a chamber maid named Maddie, but people cried "RACIST!" over her "stereotypical African American portrayal." When they changed her to a waitress named Tiana, people cried "RACIST!" over her being "white-washed." No matter how they portray her, people will find a problem with it depending on their point-of-view.

I'm willing to let ethnic portrayals go if it still shows the characters as good people with personalities, hopes, dreams, talents, etc. of their own. Take Pocahontas. While the Natives in the movie suffer from "Positive Discrimination," or being too good and talented compared to white characters, every named Native we see still has individual personalities, desires, virtues, and flaws of their own.

Another example is the Crows from Dumbo. People take offense to the Crows for being... well, black, but I love them because they're fun, likable, and literally the only characters with kindness aside from Dumbo, Mrs. Jumbo, and Timothy. Every other character is shown to be shallow, cruel, and greedy, and flat stereotypes. The other elephants are malicious gossips, the ring master is a fat, pompous, blustering windbag, the clowns are ignorant greedy dregs of society. The Crows are literally the only characters with hidden depths and kindness under their jerky exterior.

What I mind is overt "ethnics are less moral, civilized, capable, etc. to whites." Peter Pan's portrayal of the Indians bothers me not because of "What Made the Red Man Red" (it's a fun, catchy song that gives a positive association to children) but because of how Wendy reacts to the boys adopting red man ways. "Boys, do you want to stay here and grow up like savages?" Even when I was, like, three, I thought "But that's just their way. Maybe, to them, your ways are savage." Then Pocahontas came out a few years later. I felt vindicated! XD

So, sometimes it depends on individual interpretation.

Lanalamprouge, No matter what that song is still very racist. Also, during one part of the movie, I remember either one of Wendy's brothers or a lost boy saying "Oh no, it's the Indians." That sounds so racist and they just give an overall look of Indians as crazy people in the movie. I mean come on, they made them almost tomato red and with overly exaggerated features. And no matter what, the song is a very racist song. You can still like the movie, though unfortunately it is pretty racist.

nowadays nobody knows what racism really means anyway. I mean, anytime a white person disagrees with someone who isn't white people call that racist! if it's prejudiced, rude or hateful towards someone because of their race and isn't meant to be positive, it's racist.

PATF is not racist at all. At best I would say portraying white people as rich airheads is the only racist thing, and even then it wasn't supposed to be offensive.

shanyuisboss: No offense, but you keep saying "What Made the Red Man Red is racist," "it's racist," "it's racist" over and over again, but you rarely describe how.

I have to agree with AudreyFreak that the term "racist" gets thrown around so much it's lost all meaning. To me, racism is the belief or subconscious feeling that people of one ethnicity is inherently inferior or "less" (intellectually, morally, physically, culturally, technologically, etc) than another. If you're going to go around saying "that's racist," "that's racist," "that's racist," for pity's sake, you've got to describe why it's racist. HOW it perpetuates the idea that people or customs of one race are inherently less than another.

Again, though. Racism is to the eye of the beholder. I have quite a African Americans who weren't too thrilled that Tiana is the first/only black princess and she spent most of her movie as a frog. There are others who think she's such a great role model it doesn't matter. Me? I find her portrayal in the movie fine but HATE the merchandizing reducing her skin color and ethnic features. Even my sister, who could care less about race and animation issues, said that before she saw the movie she didn't get why people gushed over Tiana being "The first black princess" until I sat her down to watch the movie that she saw, "Oh, Tiana is black (as in, ethnically and culturally), not just tan and vaguely ethnic with dark curly hair."

To me, the Disney Princess merchandizing being made up of only teenage beauty-pageant perfect young women, then reducing the one African American princess's skin color, hair color, and ethnic features so she looks more like the white girls around her gives the strong implication that black is less beautiful than white, or that she has to look more "white" and less "African American" to be pretty enough to be among them. I find that much worse than happening to be an animal through most of her film.

So, again, if you feel something's racist, that's okay, but you've got to explain why.

The fact that people call Native Americans "Indians" when Indians are from India. I can't stand how someone would say "No." Or "Neutral"

I can't believe the audacity of some people, you sick people. If it's a joke no I don't mind, if it's something like what's in PeterPan, I can't stand to see people except it. What racist fucks you all must be to except something like that. Oh, wait now someone will say I'm overreacting. I'm really NOT, all the Asians that were tormented and the black people that were slaves. Not to even mention the Native Americans that were pillaged and banned from their own home. It's one thing if it's funny it's another if it's disrespectful. I hate to diss on my own race, but white people are the ones who don't care. They don't care because they don't know what it's like. Sure sometimes I get called "a no rhythm white girl" but I can only imagine all the stereotypes other races have to go through, I find them to suffer from this racism. I take pity on them. I just can't believe people still like PeterPan it makes me ...just sick. I hate this poll, it gives me all the anger I need to be a bitch and trying hard to be nice. I just can't even express my disgust, PeterPan is what takes the racism WAY to far. Don't anyone say "It was still racist back then." There is NO excuse for discrimination and that's something I always hated about Disney. People blindly ignore the obvious, people just don't care anymore. They think it as a joke apparently it amuses some people.

Any form of stereotypes. Any form of humor. It's like oh haha we made the black guy look like a monkey. That's not racist at all. We made the Native Americans look like free-dancing fools. Who cares! You OVERLOOK! You said it yourself, "Racism get thrown around a lot it's almost lost all meaning." NO IT HASNT! Please I'm trying to be so nice. Heck, even the hill billies in PaTF is racist. You lets things slide you don't think about it at all. You don't take time to consider! It's not fair, and unfortunately life is not fair. I don't care, I mean no one will agree with me. I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Well, that's a hard one. I don't like racism, but I don't go mad about, for example, the centaurette in Fantasia. I don't think they were trying to hurt other races, they were just playing around with stereotypes and cartoony characters. But many times, there really is no racism. The crows in Dumbo, for example, were voiced by black people, except for the leader. Swanpride published a great article about Disney and Racism in the Disney club. It's one of my favorite articles here.
