It must seems like I've come to Fanpop with defending the Classics at my top priority, but it's not. I'm really frustated when people insist in making the same unvalid points, I'm sorry.

You do realize you're being very immature right now....why don't you just talk to me one on one instead of making these little jabs at my opinion....JUST because I don't agree with you

I'm not making jabs at your opinion in particular. It just happens that you have the opinion that frustates me. And I already talked to you and the only reason I won't message you with my points is because I already made an article like that and you can read it if you want.

And I'm sorry if I'm being immature, but I am sometimes. Like Ariel, I'm rather impulsive and weak mental-wise.

Yeah well.....assuming you were born in 1991, you should act your own age. (23) I think you have better things to do than argue with a 15 year old.....and turn all of your Classic-era goons against me xD

Sorry, I don't lose my patience in person...but online, I'm a ticking time bomb....I guess that would be my biggest flaw.

^^Hello, who ever said I was born in 91? It's the year of release of Beauty and the Beast, my favorite DP movie. I'm actually not much far from you in age. Classic-era goons? I'm not Maleficent, I don't have goons, sorry. I have friends here in Fanpop that share my opinions. And yeah, I also don't tent to lose my patience in person, but online...

^I agree, dclairmont. What annoys me is the reasons that most people give when bashing. They don't have personality... people who say that obviously never watched their movies.

Hmmn. I think I missed something, judging on the conversation above.
Anyway, the Classics in particular get a lot of criticism, so I know what you mean. They deserve more credit as heroines. But, all of the princesses have their bashers that attack them for lame or just plain inaccurate reasons.

The thing is: I think you're wrong and should at least rewatch their movies before bashing them. That's why I don't think what you're doing is admirable, because you're bashing, and I HATE bashing, not only in the Classic Princesses.

So, I'm sorry If I been making a fuss, but this day was particulary difficult for me and not because of all that happened there. I would really like if you also read my article "In Defense of the Classic Princesses" because I'm a bit tired of explaining my points over and over. I understand you're incomfortable with their ideals and the era their movies were produced. I understand that's why you're one of the "minority"(I really don't like this word very much) who would be bullyed (I'm not sure that's how it is spelt) in that time, since you're Jewish. But one of the ideals of feminism (not the man-hating kind) is letting women do their own choices, so why criticize the Classic for making them?

Really, people bash Snow White saying she's a housewife, but they have no idea how difficult being a housewife and a mother is, nor do I. She's not much different from Tiana, who also enjoys cooking and is not much different from Cinderella, who is a hard-worker who wants more for her life, just like Belle, who is sophisticated like Aurora, who is sheltered like Rapunzel, who is bubbly as Snow White and Ariel.

I wish you a goodnight, because I'm retiring to sleep, and apologize for being so immature about it. But we all have things that annoy us gravely, and bashing is the one that does that to me.

I mean, it's annoying when people can't seem to view them logically or listen to reasons- I find "feminist" critics of Disney to be the worst (I use the quotes around feminist because I find the whole idea of requiring female characters to fit a "tough girl" mold so anti-feminist, not intended as some sort of jab at feminism)

I agree with that.....I mean, the truth is, most girls are not like Snow White, and not like, say, Merida...but even Merida is a little realistic. Disney is getting better at creating realistic and relatable female characters, and I love those the most!

I probably should have said "Kinda." While everyone is allowed their own opinion (I certainly dislike some of the most universally beloved princesses) I often think the reasons people list for hating the classic princesses are reasons they've been conditioned to think.

I think most of us were told growing up that the classic ladies are ___ and a lot of people repeat these opinions without giving it much thought themselves. I used to join in the classic princess bashing until college, when I started thinking about it critically and realized I didn't really agree with many commonly accepted views.

The almost universally accepted views that are either based on faulty logic or events that didn't even happen in the film ("Cinderella just sits around waiting for her fairy godmother and/or man to do everything for her." Um, did you even watch the movie?) are the ones that annoy me, and the ones I'll try to debunk.

If people really think about what they believe and what another person has said before continuing their own view, I can respect them. Those that brush aside any point made without even thinking about it or continuing the claim something long proven incorrect ("You know X didn't actually happen in the film?") are the ones that annoy me to no end.

And their "beauty" isn't the sole thing that defines them...and that is my main problem with the Classic princesses...a woman can totally be feminine, and flaunt her femininity, while still having a spine, and a personality, and actually having FLAWS. So as I write this, I think Anna from Frozen is the princess that comes to mind. She is VERY relatable. The writers didn't shy away from showing her snoring, and drooling, and having bed head. On top of that, she doesn't hide her femininity! She flaunts it! Anna is a step in the right direction, and she's already one of my favorites

Sigh....but the Classic princesses DO deserve more credit...they're not totally helpless..people shouldn't be so hard on them. I'm going to watch the movies again and see how I feel then. THAT DOESNT MEAN I AM ADMITTING DEFEAT, I AM MERELY ANALYZING MY OPINION :)

Completely. I post regularly on IMDB's Frozen board and am the most outspoken on this topic. and let me say, I'm about ready to quit. I argue that Elsa is very similar to the classics so if you respect Elsa, respect the others too, and the Elsa fans/classic haters just make the same arguments. it's going in circles. it isn't even there, I've seen this other places too. people seem DETERMINED to hate any women who don't fit into the current ideal of womanhood. and funny, while as Rhythmic pointed out it is usually feminists who do this, this attitude is ironically very sexist.

I know a lot of you who don't prefer the classics still analyze them and just don't prefer them and that's fine, I respect that. but most people don't use your critical thinking. they say "zomg Snow White took food from a stranger, what a moron!" like they haven't even seen the movie. what really gets me is when people hate on them for things they ignore/defend about the newer girls (like, say, nobody really has a problem with Jasmine trusting a stranger).

I better stop. You know me, I won't shut up about my girls.

Ok, so the bottom line for me isn't about feminism...it's really just personal preference. I don't like the personalities, or lack thereof, of the early princesses. I don't think it goes much deeper than that. PLus feminism is a touchy subject as it is. But i like Elsa...she is similar to the early princesses as she is very elegant, and poised...but she is very COMPLEX. It shows what goes on underneath that facade, and having to be so controlled all the time. If Snow White was made in this day and age, I imagine they would show her in the same way. Because someone would be under a lot of pressure if they had to act like that 100% of the time

Sorry to promote Frozen, but that's another reason I love it so much. I love the contrasts between Anna and Elsa. Yes, Elsa acts very emotionless in person, but the film explores that. There's a reason, because she is under a TREMENDOUS amount of pressure, and we really empathize with her. That's not who she really is, she just has to hold back her true feelings in order to keep her powers secret. And I think if they went and explored the emotions of Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, I would respect them a little more. But hey you can't change the past!

But hey, jasmine, Mulan and Pocahontas are all sort of on the bland side. I guess I'm just a little picky....or easily bored xD the more I think about it, the era doesn't really matter. I can just be highly critical of the characters, and how their emotions are expressed

I haven't seen Frozen, but I think AudryFreak's argument deserves to be expanded upon. I agree that people are determined to hate the Classic Princesses, brush aside all virtues and accomplishments (even the ones they praise in more modern princesses), and completely zoom in on and condemn them for faults they completely forgive in more modern princesses.

Some are just blatant double-standards. "Cinderella needed her fairy godmother to make her dress for her instead of doing it herself. " And Ariel didn't need Ursula and later Triton to make legs for her? She took the time to learn transformation magic for herself? "They can't do anything on their own!/They need so-and-so to help them." Every princesses needs help occasionally. Ariel has everyone in the whole movie--I mean, Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle. Belle has Chip near the end. Jasmine has Raja. Pocahontas has Miko, Flit and Grandmother Willow. Mulan has Mushu and Cricket. Not everyone can do everything by themselves.

Again, those that watch carefully, think critically, and consider other viewpoints as they form their own I can respect. Those that disregard and just go with socially accepted viewpoints just annoy me.

They can think whatever they want, but they still annoy me.

I give them a smug look and tell them this

There are about 19 (including Frozen, I'm being optimistic) Disney Films that are looked upon by the Disney Company as one of their great successful classics

only 7 of them are NOT made by Walt Disney (TLM,B&B,Aladdin,Lion King,Tangled,WIR, Frozen)

The rest Walt DIsney made himself

Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book.

So HA!
