A lot of people on ファンポップ say that Merida is selfish and not not a good role model. Personally, I think that is far from the truth.
Merida wasn't being totally selfish when she went to the witch. Impulsive, yes. Her mind was clouded によって all the emotion she felt and acted before she thought things through. When she asked for a potion that would change her mother, I think she wanted something to change her mothers MIND. Not her personality.
I think Merida is actually quite selfless. When her plan to change her mother went awry, she didn't even hesitate to help her mom. She went totally out of her way to teach her mom to be a くま, クマ and never left her side.
The biggest thing Merida haters forget is how selfless Merida was was when she volunteered to marry one of the suitors when she realized how bad things had become. She saw that her freedom was not worth all this fighting and hate between the clans and that she would do anything to repair it.
All in all, I believe that Merida may have made one bad decision but proved herself によって doing everything she possibly could to fix things, even if it meant sacrificing her freedom, which she eventually got to keep anyways. Her actions were very brave.
