Stefan Salvatore has been tortured, he’s been killed, and he’s even been forced to spend an entire summer drowning over and over again. But in this week’s

, he’s going to experience something new: While he’s dealing with his own personal hell, someone new is going to take over his body. It might sound complicated, but for Paul Wesley, it was an opportunity.

“It’s actually one of my favorite episodes of the season,” Wesley tells EW. “As an actor I get to play two different roles which was really fun. It’s quite different from anything we’ve seen before.” 

As for Wesley’s new character, he says the guy is “not from our time.” Furthermore, Wesley says, “He is an absolute and utter sociopath. He doesn’t think like a normal human being. He is mentally deranged.”

He’s so deranged that Wesley says he finds Damon to be humorous. “He kind of thinks Damon’s a joke. He thinks he’s a very funny … he has one line where he goes, ‘You’re a funny guy. We should get a drink sometime. You amuse me.’ ”

“The guy’s also much older,” Wesley continues, “He’s much more manipulative and sociopathic than Damon ever could imagine himself to be.”

But speaking to what’s really going on with Stefan — other than the obvious battle for his body – Wesley says this episode really focuses on the relationship between the Salvatore brothers. “Damon had a Civil War episode, that was kind of his episode, and this is kind of Stefan’s episode to get into his psyche,” he says. “But a big part of it is about the brothers. It’s really confronting everything that’s been going on for the last 7 seasons.”

So could Wesley ever see Stefan leaving Damon behind? “Yeah, definitely,” he says, adding, “[But] in the end, they’re brothers and they’re linked by a family bond. They can say bye for a given amount of time, but I do think they’re like magnets and they go back to one another. They’re polar opposites but they still need each other in many different ways.” 

And this experience is going to force the brothers to face that push and pull. “The big burning question is: Will the brothers face their demons in terms of the betrayal? Are they going to reconcile? Is there going to be a sense of the brothers forgiving one another, or Stefan forgiving Damon?”
