CHAPTER TWO
During chapter one, we left off at the Reaping where Katniss’s 12 年 old little sister was chosen to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. Of course, Katniss is shocked. In order to protect her, Katniss volunteers to take her little sister’s place in the Hunger Games. There had never been a volunteer in the Hunger Games before, and the audience does not clap または Katniss. Instead, she receives the District 12’s sault that is often used when saying a final goodbye to a loved one. It is commonly used in a funeral. In this chapter, we also meet the only living Hunger Games Victor from District 12: Haymitch. Of course, like usual, he is drunk and falls off stage while it is all caught on camera. Effie Trinket then chooses the male tribute: Peeta Mellark. Shocked, Katniss remembers a faint memory from her childhood. It was soon after her father died and her family was suffering hunger. (Not a rare sight in District 12) Katniss was scavenging for food, desperate, for any scrapes from the trash cans behind the area’s bakery. She is surprised when a big lady comes and shoos her away, yelling at her to get out of her sight. She also spots a small blond boy behind the woman, around her age. Unfortunately, Katniss didn’t find any 食 and is so weak from hunger that she slumps against the 木, ツリー によって the bakery, unable to 移動する another foot. 秒 later, she hears a loud slap and yelling. She then spots the same blond boy exit the bakery, his cheek all red from where his mom had slapped him. He is holding 2 loaves of bread, charred from the 火災, 火 that he “accidently” dropped the breads in. He looks at her and throws her a loaf of パン which saves Katniss and her family from hunger later that night. The 次 day, Katniss runs into the blond boy with the パン after school. They make eye contact and Katniss glances down, embarrassed. She spots the first dandelion of the season and remembers of the days in the forest she spent hunting with her father. She suddenly realizes that she can find a way to feed her family, to hunt in the woods. That is the end of the memory. We learn that Katniss always looked as Peeta, the blond boy with bread, had always reminded her of hope and she had always tried to find a way to thank him. But how can she thank him now that he was her enemy?
