It’s Official: ‘Shadowhunters’ Given 13-Episode, Straight-to-Series Order at ABC Family
While we’ve known for a couple of weeks that
would be airing on ABC Family (thanks to leaked casting information and this picture from Martin Moszkowicz), it has officially been confirmed!
According to the press release ABC Family sent out,
has been given a 13-episode, straight-to-series order for its first season. That means that we’re guaranteed 13 episodes of the one-hour drama regardless of how the show is perceived or its ratings.
“I’m excited to see ABC Family bring the world of the Shadowhunters to life. As a huge fan of long-form television drama, I can’t wait to see the story unfold and for the fans to have more time with the world and the characters,” added book author, Cassandra Clare.
Here’s a statement from ABC Family president Tom Ascheim:
is a big epic saga that will resonate with viewers who come to ABC Family for the
and Twilight franchises,” ABC Family president Tom Ascheim said. “A
best-seller for 122-consecutive weeks, with over 35 million copies in print worldwide,
is the perfect story to share with our audience.”
will film in Toronto, where the movie was filmed, with May being eyed as the start of production.
Casting is currently underway on the project with the show’s premiere date to be determined.
UPDATE: Here’s a video of Cassandra Clare announcing the news posted by the show’s official Twitter account (@ShadowhuntersTV):

ABC FAMILY ENTERS A WORLD WHERE ALL LEGENDS ARE TRUE
Series Is Based on the Beloved New York Times Bestselling Book Series
Burbank, CA (March 30, 2015) – ABC Family has picked up its first scripted saga-to-series, “Shadowhunters,” from The Mortal Instruments franchise, announced today by Tom Ascheim, President, ABC Family and Karey Burke, Executive Vice President, Programming and Development, ABC Family. The series will go into production this May in Toronto.
Based on the bestselling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, “Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.
“’Shadowhunters’ is a big epic saga that will resonate with viewers who come to ABC Family for the ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Hunger Games,’ and ‘Twilight’ franchises,” said Ascheim. “A New York Times bestseller for 122-consecutive weeks, with over 35 million copies in print worldwide, ‘Shadowhunters’ is the perfect story to share with our audience.”
Burke continued, “Clary is a strong, dynamic and captivating character that our audience will immediately identify with. They will want her to succeed and will root for her on her journey to become who she was always meant to be. The series has a passionate fan base and an expansive universe that can sustain multiple seasons to come.”
“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Film, and Ed Decter serves as executive producer and showrunner.

Omfg!! I’m glad it’s going to be only 13 episodes per season, because it gives enough time for the many things that happened in City of Bones that were excluded from the movie!!
That’s only the number of guaranteed episodes as of now. If it does well they’ll order additional episodes for the first season, kind of like they did for Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, Chasing Life, etc. But it’s exciting!
I’m guessing that the season will be 13 episodes, regardless, even if the ratings go way up? Since Constantin will need to have a structure scoped out in advance, and adding more episodes onto the end of the series would require changing things around.
What’s interesting is that filming is being reported once again to begin in May. Is this slightly old news, or is the delay to late June just a false rumor?
@DamonCassle i love the idea of a 13 episode first season. Unfortunately all too often when a show has something like the traditional 22 episodes i’ve found that there tends to be filler. Game of Thrones has what 10 episode seasons? Which works quite well for them.
They probably want to put as much of their budget as they can into each episode, and with a shorter season they can really utilize their money.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers has to be Valintine. I loved the actor that played the werewolf role in the movie. Campbell was great as Jase too. Now that ABC Family is picking this up I will read the other books.
The movie actors will not return for the tv series. New actors are being cast right now.
So will there not be movie sequels to the movie City of Bones? I loved the book series and always thought the sequels would eventually come out.
You just named the two casting choices from the movie I hated the most. Funny how different people like different things! :)
While Meyers is a fine actor, IMO his Valentine was terrible. His version was the character was as far from the books character as it gets.
Jamie as Jace was also not that great IMO. I don’t have anything against him as an actor, but his Jace was waaaaaay too serious. I hope they pick an actor for the show who can also be funny as well as serious.
Aidan Turner was fine, even though he was technically a little too young.
I AM EXCITED and really looking forward to Shadowhunters! Since Constantin Film is producing it, I hope and pray that the show will be shown on German television ASAP. :)
oh please oh please don’t screw it up please i hope the actors are really really good
We don’t know yet. Let’s see what the next few months will bring. As soon as we know more we will post it here on TMI Source :)
So will the 13 episodes be the first book? Because it will break my heart if they get through the 13 episodes and leave a cliffhanger, and then it doesn’t get renewed… :(
BTA I’m so excited!!! But ABCfamily isn’t available in Belgium :\'( how will my parabatai and able to see the show then???? I’m getting desperate!! Please, don’t air it a year later like they do with Game of Thrones :\'( :\'(
God, I would love to audition for Clary. She’s awesome!
BY THE ANGEL, IT’S ABOUT TIME WE GET DEFINITE INFO!!! And for the sake of the Fandoms sanity, I hope it doesn’t suck. After seeing the major movie fail (not the casting; all fine w/ them as actors an stuff, just hated scripting) I hope that Constantine doesn’t screw this up. Been a fan since 2010, and just got my friend to agree to be my parabatai. We both say in silence as the movie credits rolled, and noticed that the director also directed the third Jurassic park (I think) and the Eragon movies. Both of which were major fails too. Coincidence? Maybe. But I don’t believe in coincidences three times over.
I agree that the cast was not the problem. If you break down what dialogue the rest of the cast was given, it really was not much (before you roast me alive for this comment, watch the movie, again and think about it, they did well with what they were given). The books are very robust with material and dialogue. The script was only generous to the character of Clary whether the problem with the movie for general audiences was a time issue(2 hour versus 3 hour movie) thus an editing issue, marketing issue, or the script, who knows. The movie in of itself was not bad for a movie, but it just was not what a fan would expect after reading the books. To be honest, I became a fan after watching that movie late one night after coming home from work (to unwind). It happened to be on television and the description sounded interesting. However, after the movie, I liked it but was left wondering, “what am I missing?”, “Was this based on a book?” So, I looked the book up and went to the book store the next day and bought the first book. I loved it so much, I read it in less than a day, then bought the rest of the books the next day. I have since passed them off to the rest of my large family and they are happily making the rounds though the households. The books are amazing. I just hope that the tv series is well done. I read somewhere that the person in charge of it is the same guy who did “In Plain Sight”. That gives me some hope, since the main character in that series had the same snarky humor that Jace’s character does. I loved that show.
I’m really excited it’s on ABC Family! Their a great network that makes fantastic hour long dramas. It’s a good sign that they’ll be serious about the plot lines and won’t screw w/ complex characters (AKA: Valentine.) can’t wait!!!!!
Wow great to see this announced at last! Thanks TMI Source☺
