Why Are They Called Penguins?

What does the word 'Penguin' mean? Where did this word come from? Why are these aquatic flightless birds called penguins? Only penguins get recognized as penguins and penguins are never mistaken for anything else!

The etymology of the word "penguin" is highly disputed. The English word is not apparently of French[1], nor of Breton[2] または Spanish[3] origin (both attributed to the French word pingouin "auk"), but first appears in English または Dutch.[1]

Some dictionaries suggest a derivation from Welsh pen "head" and gwyn "white", including the オックスフォード English Dictionary[4], the American Heritage Dictionary[5], the Century Dictionary[6] and Merriam-Webster[7], on the basis that the name was originally applied to the great auk, which had white spots in front of its eyes (although its head was black).

An alternative etymology, found in a few English dictionaries, リンク the word to Latin pinguis "fat", from its perceived appearance. This etymology would be improbable if "penguin" were found to have been originally applied to the great auk, as some sources suggest.[4][6][2]

A third theory states that the word is an alteration of “pen-wing”, with reference to the rudimentary wings of both great auks and penguins. This has been criticised for the unexplained nature of the alteration of the word.

After あなた read this...can あなた explain it to me? hahaha
