Why did caul stay hidden?

Its a little bit もっと見る than a question, but in Hollow city why would the wights who were (SPOILER ALERT) killed によって hughs bees ask the kids about their ymbryne when they already captured her. Why didn't ransom riggs make it so that miss peregrine was replaced with caul when bronwyn accidently left miss peregrine on the train?
