Without book knowledge to guide fans, rumors and speculation about the upcoming season of
are at an all-time high. And while some news indicated several heartwarming reunions might be on the horizon, a new reports promises something much more chilling for one of the show’s most tormented characters. Read below the spoiler link to find out the latest on Sansa Stark’s Season 6 fate.
The always-reliable site Watchers on the Wall reports that Sansa will be returning to Winterfell. That’s a mixed blessing for the older Stark girl. Winterfell is her ancestral home, but it’s also where she spent that terrible wedding night last year. Sansa will come face to face with her tormentor, Ramsay Bolton née Snow. But she won’t be alone. Sansa will be joined by Littlefinger and—oh brother—Jon Snow, plus one more mystery guest. (We’re not even shocked by the Kit Harington sightings now, are we?)
When last she we saw Sansa, she was tumbling from the high walls of Winterfell with Theon Greyjoy by her side. Theon, we know, is headed back to
home on the Iron Islands to join the Greyjoy family drama. And we already knew from earlier reports that Sansa and Jon were headed for their own family reunion this year. At the very least, we can assume that the long-separated siblings (ish) are on each other’s side. But we can also assume that even if she’s come to retake Winterfell from the Boltons (after the mighty battle we’ve heard so much about), Sansa will experience some trauma coming face-to-face with her tormentor. Fingers crossed her next step is bashing that face in.
But the real wild card in this scene is Littlefinger. It would be nice to assume that he’s
on Sansa’s side given his creepy fascination with her. But we know better than to trust the fate of a Stark to Littlefinger, don’t we?
If Littlefinger was so protective of Sansa, why did he leave her alone and vulnerable with the Boltons to go spill the beans to Cersei that the Stark she considers complicit in her son’s death is still alive? Littlefinger advised Cersei to hold off on taking revenge in the North and “let Stannis and Roose battle. Let the enemies of the throne do battle and when they’re done, seize Winterfell from whichever thief survives.” But Cersei should have realized after Littlefinger asked her to make him “Warden of the North”—a position always held by a Stark until Roose Bolton came along—that
was the one intending to seize Winterfell. In exchange, he promised Cersei “Sansa Stark’s head on a spike.” Once again, we’d like to think that was Littlefinger manipulating Cersei, but who knows? Littlefinger reliably puts his own self-interest above all else, so hopefully Jon and Sansa are too smart to trust him.
But for all his potential manipulative power, Littlefinger may find himself outmatched by one more figure spotted filming that scene at Winterfell. WotW reports that after a tense exchange between Ramsay, Littlefinger, Jon, and Sansa, “a giant turns up at the gates! The giant tries to force its way in and the people inside have to fight it off.” It’s unclear whether this giant is Wun Wun—Jon’s friend from Hardhome—or another giant entirely but we can hope that he’s fighting on the side of the ex-Lord Commander.
Sansa’s trials up North may not be over, but at least she finally has some powerful and loyal allies on her side.
