I don't get the big deal about the gif icons. I mean, I don't get why people hate them so much on Fanpop.

EDIT: Just tried to upload one for myself but it didn't work. It moves, but the picture is all messed up.

I find them phenomenally irritating as user icons, because they are little and flicker all over the place. I love gifs but have a whole bunch of them flash at you all at once burns my eyes. And its not like you can turn them off. There isn't a no-gif viewing option. If you want to come on Fanpop, from now on you are forced to see Justin Beiber jumping around someone's icon everyday. Unless of course you are one of the lucky ones with internet that slows down when gifs clog up a page...

I guess I am just used to LiveJournal where so many people have animated icons. I'm fond of them on LJ, actually.

I know it's only a temporary fix, but you can hit escape to stop gifs from moving.

When they were first allowed years ago, they became quite a problem, slowing down page loads, which made the site much more unusable for people using dial-up or other slower internet connections. They were quite the vogue for a few months, and then their use dropped off dramatically, in part because there was a big backlash by the majority of users against their use. But now, some people tell me that the .gif format was disabled for icons at some point during the last few years. I've always used .jpg for my images, so I can't say whether this is true or not.

But now, in 2011, the Fanpop site has changed significantly from where it started five years ago. We regularly get horrible animations in the form of intrusive commercial advertising (1), which makes the irritation and performance hit of animated .gifs pale in comparison. Also, it sounds like animated .gif files are not allowed for club icons, which was a much bigger problem than user icons, as there are far more pages and places on Fanpop where many club icons are displayed at once. With user icons, we mostly just have to bear with comments threads and walls (the "featured fans" list in each club and on the top page isn't a large enough list to cause a significant performance problem), and the users using animated .gif icons are still a tiny minority, thankfully. So even those places aren't that bad hit, yet.

1 - Yes, I realize I could use an ad-blocker and never see those ads again, but that defeats the purpose for Fanpop, and I don't want to deprive them of that potential ad revenue. I have - rarely! - seen and clicked on something that interests me, as I should. If I was using an ad blocker, I'd never see that.

Hello all, sorry for any confusion. Just to set the record straight we do not currently support animated .gifs on Fanpop. There was a glitch for a day or two that allowed people to post animated .gifs but this was not intended as a new feature. We've since rectified this and only "flat", non-animated images may be uploaded at this time.

@Fanpop admin - does that mean we can't upload gifs to the fanart section at all? Or does the no gif rule pertain only to user icons?

^Nope. I tried uploading one last night just to see what it looked like and it came out "flat"

I don't mind subtle *unobtrusive* animations, but they irritate the hell out of me when people start donning user icons that could give epileptics seizures. Seriously guys, those are tasteless no matter what site your on.

I'm using gif as my new user icon..but it doesn't move at all..
