Not all heroes wear capes and not all heroes are bipeds. Every fan of The Lion King knows that even though Simba eventually steps up and take his rightful place on Pride Rock, it takes a village of animal friends to help him transform from tiny cub, to apprehensive young adult, to king. While Mufasa teaches Simba about a king’s character and Rafiki provides wisdom along the way, we think that Sarabi is the low-key hero of The Lion King, and here’s why:

Yes, she’s a literal queen but she’s also respected and loved by her people. They look to her for guidance.

2. She isn’t afraid to show a little tough love.

Even lion moms have to nudge their kids to get a move on every now and then, especially if said kids woke them up early.

Humility is a pretty necessary skill for a future ruler, and so is cleanliness. Sarabi combines both in a lesson Simba will never forget.

When Pride Rock is abandoned and left in the clutches of evil Scar, Sarabi doesn’t back down or give up. On the contrary, she becomes the leader of the hunting pack and cares for the other lions.

Even when she’s surrounded by a horde of snarling hyenas, Sarabi never loses her mojo. With a simple side-eye and a Beyonce strut, she takes it all in stride and refuses to lose her cool.

Scar is a terrible ruler who literally burns the kingdom to the ground. Sarabi calls him out , and actually devises a plan of action. She’s also brave enough to pick up and move her pride to someplace unknown, to ensure their safety.

When Simba returns and they have a fighting chance of defeating Scar once and for all, Sarabi leads her fellow lionesses in the battle against the hyenas. One thing’s for sure: We wouldn’t mess with her.

In the end, Sarabi reunites with Simba and helps him take his rightful place as the ruler of Pride Rock. Without her, the Pride Lands, and animals who live in them, might never have recovered from Scar’s devastation. .
