I like the fairytale based ones. They all are made original in their own right because Disney uses creativity to change up the stories, but I still like the familiarity of the ones that are based on fairytales. You have an idea of what to expect, but Disney gives it a new twist.
Another DP tradition that's been broken by Brave and now Moana, the first ten DP films took stories that were already familiar and iconic to the public consciousness and made them into their own, and I actually kinda like that.
Pocahontas and Mulan aren't really based on fairytales or definitive literary works, they're based on legends/myths, but they're still inspired from pre-existing folklore.
^I was almost going to put Mulan and Pocahontas under legends but I didn't know for sure how much was original and how much was true to their legends
I think Brave had potential to be a great original story that could be seen as a brand new fairy tale but instead they used some of Brother Bear's story, had the main character make questionable and unredeemable choices, and the plot overall was pretty dull.
Moana had a more decent story compared to Brave but there were things that could have been left out, the characters' development could have been better, and the surprise villain (while an interesting twist) still feels like something thrown in at the last second
^At least Brave will be an iconic and memorable story, I mean "princess turns her mom into a bear" is pretty unforgettable. Even casual Disney watchers could tell you the synopsis of Brave,
I don't think casual Disney fans could tell you even the basic premise of Moana, the closest they could probably tell you is "an island princess....goes on a generic sea adventure"
^when someone asks me what Brave is about I just say “it’s like Brother Bear but with a Scottish princess” lol I just prefer Moana over Brave, though after I rewatch all the princess movies that might change.
