"EVELYN PRENTICE" (1934) Review

"EVELYN PRENTICE" marked the third collaboration between William Powell and Myrna Loy in 1934. MGM Studios first had the pair co-star with Clark Gable in the hit crime melodrama, "MANHATTAN MELODRAMA". Then the pair hit ゴールド and became solidified as a screen team in "THE THIN MAN". Following the success of the latter, MGM paired them in a melodrama called "EVELYN PRENTICE".

William K. Howard directed this adaptation of W.E. Woodward's 1931 novel about Evelyn Prentice, the neglected wife of a successful attorney, who drifts into dangerous waters when she becomes...

”AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS” (1956) Review

Based upon Jules Verne’s 1873 classic novel, ”AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS” is the story of a 19th century English gentleman named Phileas Fogg and his newly employed French valet, Passepartout, attempt to circumnavigate the world in eighty (80) days on a £20,000 wager set によって his フレンズ at the Reform Club. Produced によって Michael Todd, the Academy Award winning film starred David Niven, Cantinflas, Shirley MacLaine and Robert Newton.

Could someone please explain how ”AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS” managed to win the 1956 Best Picture Academy...

Below is my review of the 1939 classic, "STAGECOACH", which was directed によって John Ford:

"STAGECOACH" (1939) Review

The 年 1939 is regarded によって many film critics and moviegoers as the best 年 for Hollywood films. According to them, Hollywood was at the height of its Golden Age, and this particular 年 saw the release of an unusually large number of exceptional movies, many of which have been honored as memorable classics when multitudes of other films of the era have been largely forgotten. I do not harbor the same view as these critics and moviegoers. I can only view at least a handful of...

 The Haunting
The Haunting
Hi guys, I will be 書く 2 horror films and they're The Innocents and The Haunting. Both films are based on novels and I'll write a review about them right now.

The Haunting

Considering that was made in the 60's and there were no modern technologies for CGI at that time. I 愛 how they use the Psychological fear that are shown in both Nell and Theo.
It is actually unclear if the house is haunted または that Nell did it for the sake of attention, I would definitely go with the latter because Nell is mentally unstable in my opinion and that she has been looking after her ailing mother prior to...

"LITTLE WOMEN" (1949) Review

Louisa May Alcott's 1868 novel is a bit of a conundrum for me. I have never been a ファン of the novel. I have read it once, but it failed to maintain my interest. Worse, I have never had the urge to read it again. The problem is that it is that sentimental family dramas - at least in print - has never been appealing to me. And this is why I find it perplexing that I have never had any problems watching any of the film または テレビ adaptations of her novel.

One of those adaptations proved to be Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's 1949 adaptation, which was produced and directed...

オードリー・ヘップバーン
Audrey Hepburn
One of the best 女優 to come out of the 50s and 60s is easily Audrey Hepburn: she had style, she had class, she was sophisticated and always played the good girls (with a bit of a spin). Charming and easy to get along with she was the perfect poster girl for the 50s and early 60s (when most of her notable work was done). However, she is often looked over and chalked up to being an "icon" もっと見る than a viable actress. However, she had some great ones, and no, they weren't just "breakfast at tiffany's" and "My Fair Lady" -- in my view the former is only 3 while the latter barely makes the...

"DEVIL AND THE DEEP" (1932) Review

I am not one of those movie 恋愛中 who seemed to my selection of films to one particular genre または period in filmaking. Nor do I regard films from one particular era to be superior to another. I either enjoy an individual film または I do not.

Recently, I watched the 1932 melodrama called "DEVIL AND THE DEEP". The movie featured the screen debut of Charles Laughton as a submarine commander who expresses jealousy toward any man who pays attention to his long suffering wife. It also starred Tallulah Bankhead as the long suffering wife and the commander’s new...

"TOM JONES" (1963) Review

Recently, I searched my memories for any 映画 produced outside of the United States that not only won the Academy Award for Best Picture, but I would also consider a personal お気に入り of mine. Only one came to mind - the 1963 movie, "TOM JONES".

"TOM JONES" turned out to be the 秒 non-Hollywood film that won the coveted Oscar prize. Directed によって Tony Richardson, the movie is an adaptation of Henry Fielding's 1749 novel, "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling", about the coming-of-age and misadventures of an illegitimate young man, raised によって a landowner in mid-18th...

"THE SEA HAWK" (1940) Review

If anyone has ever read Rafael Sabatini’s 1915 novel, "The Sea Hawk", he または she has clearly seen that the so-called 1940 film adaptation with the same タイトル . . . is not the same story. I have never read Sabatini’s novel. But I have a friend who has. And according to him, the 1924 silent film adaptation bore a closer resemblance to the novel.

In the end, it is not surprising that this 1940 adventure bore little または no resemblance to Sabatini’s novel – aside from the main protagonist enduring a stint as slave aboard a Spanish galley. Although Warner Brothers...

"THE MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER" (1953) Review

Tyrone Power's career took a strange turn during the post-World War II years. Although he still managed to maintain his position as one of Twentieth Century Fox's 上, ページのトップへ stars during the remainder of the 1940s, something happened as the 1950s dawned. Powers still found himself in Grade A 映画 during that particular decade. But he also seemed to appear in a growing number of standard costume melodramas.

Twentieth Century 狐, フォックス lent Powers to Universal Pictures to 星, つ星 in the 1953 drama called "THE MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER". Directed によって Rudolph Maté, "THE MISSISSIPPI...

"OTHER MEN'S WOMEN" (1931) Review

Adultery is rarely treated with any kind of maturity in fiction - whether in novels, plays, 映画 and television. I am not saying that adultery has never been portrayed with any maturity. It is just that . . . well, to be honest . . . I have rarely come across a movie, テレビ series, novel または play that dealt with adultery in a mature manner. または perhaps I have rarely come across others willing to face fictional adultery between two decent people with some kind of maturity.

If one simply glanced at the タイトル of the 1931 movie, "OTHER MEN'S WOMEN", any person...

"THE PRISONER OF ZENDA" (1937) Review

I realize that many film critics and ファン would agree with my suspicion that the 1930s saw a great deal of action films released to theaters. In fact, I believe there were as high number of actions films released back then as they are now. Among the type of action films that flourished during that era were swashbucklers.

One of the most famous Hollywood swashbucklers released during the 1930s was "THE PRISONER OF ZENDA", producer David O. Selznick's 1937 adaptation of Anthony Hope's 1894 novel. This tale of middle European political intrigue and identity...

Norman Bates Face-Off: 1960 vs. 1998

But the moment I realized that this is out of my hands and that MTV will do whatever the hell they want and make this regrettable remake, the only silver lining I can find is to make my own ideal cast of the hot & new that might possibly save this Titanic.

And now for my ideal cast for a least-than-ideal situation:

Russell Brand as Dr. Frank-N-Furter
This has been the only 'official' casting...

 The 4 Protagonists
The 4 Protagonists
Hi guys, I had seen this film many years 前 and I immediately feel with the film. Especially Judy Garland's portrayal of Dorothy Gale, so here is my review on this 1939 classic.

The Film

I really 愛 how the film starts of as a sepia tone, it wasn't only until Dorothy lands in Oz that it became multicolour. It was like stepping into a storybook universe that we always dream of!
I always 愛 Margaret Hamilton's portrayal as the Wicked Witch of the West, I kind of feel bad when she was killed of! But, Dorothy has no choice at all.

The Songs

The song 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' has been my...

"THE BLUE DAHLIA" (1946) Review

Sometime during World War II, novelist Raymond Chandler was hired によって Paramount Pictures to co-write the 1944 film classic, "DOUBLE INDEMNITY", with writer-director Billy Wilder. Another two years passed before the studio assigned him to write a post-war film noir movie, 1946’s "THE BLUE DAHLIA".

Directed によって George Marshall, ”THE BLUE DAHLIA” was about a U.S. Navy pilot, Lieutenant-Commander Johnny Morrison, who returns ホーム to Los Angeles with his buddies and medically discharged crewmates, Buzz Wanchek and George Copeland. Buzz is prone to memory lapses...

"WUTHERING HEIGHTS" (1939) Review

Considering the popularity of the Brontë sisters, it is not surprising that there have been considerable movie, stage and テレビ adaptations of their novels. I discovered there have been at least fifteen (15) adaptations of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel, "Wuthering Heights".

I might as well be frank . . . I am not a major ファン of the novel. I never have been. I do not dislike it, but I have always preferred the famous novels of the author's two sisters - namely "Jane Eyre" (1847) によって シャルロット, シャーロット Brontë and Anne Brontë's 1848 novel, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall"....

"RED-HEADED WOMAN" (1932) Review

According to Hollywood legend, at least a handful of 映画 made during the period known as the Pre-Code Era (1929-1934) had pushed the boundaries of on-screen decency so deeply that they may have been responsible for the stringent enforcement of the Hays Code between the mid-1930s and the late 1960s. One of those 映画 happened to be MGM's 1932 comedy called "RED-HEADED WOMAN".

Based upon Katherine Brush's 1931 novel, "RED-HEADED WOMAN" told the story of Lilian "Lil" Andrews, a young secretary at the Legendre Company who uses sex to advance her position there...

1. The King and I

This famous musical was the earliest that I saw and I 愛 the songs, but favourite scene was definitely the Small House of Uncle Thomas. I 愛 how the setting is Thai even-though the story is American.

2. The Sound of Music

I 愛 the songs and the scenery, I was in Salzburg 9 years 前 but did not 登録する the Sound of 音楽 tour sadly. But I hope to go in the future! Initially, I did not know that it was base on a true story of Captain Von Trapp....

"MILDRED PIERCE" (1945) Review

I have been a ファン of the 1945 movie, "MILDRED PIERCE" for years. Ever since the age of twelve. But many years have passed since I felt the urge to watch it. When I learned about the 最近 HBO version of the story, I decided to re-visit the past and watch the movie again.

Based upon James M. Cain’s 1941 novel, "MILDRED PIERCE" is about a middle-class woman who struggle to make a new life for herself and her daughters and maintain their social position, following the break-up of her marriage during the last years of the Great Depression. After a difficult search...
