After living in Alice Springs (central Australia), I came to 愛 the wild camel. Many were brought in によって the British, but as the 回答 above have not mentioned many were also brought in from India when the Indian Pacific (the long railway line that runs up the centre of Australia) was built. Indians built this railway and used camels to transport themselves and materials as they could carry heavy loads and did not need much water または food.
They were imported によって various British explorers throughout the 19th century, in order to investigate the interior. Around the turn of the 20th century, pioneers had started breeding camels in order to further settle in lands where camels are best suited.
Mind you, Ricky, camels in Australia can ONLY be found in zoos. They not roaming around the outback like our kangaroos and other native animals.

Actually, if あなた spent 6 months of your life living in Alice Springs (central Australia), like myslef あなた would know that camels are the rabbits of the desert. There are hundreds of them just roaming free!
The others are right (besides the living in trees with koalas lol) I'll just add that the pioneers found camels a lot better for the deserts of Australia because they could walk through sand a lot better than 馬 who had trouble with Australia's rough terrain and often destroyed the local habitation with their strong hooves.
