I can't believe Spike has so few votes... watch his first episode in season 2, School Hard, where he tries to kill Buffy, attacks the high school during parents teacher night, and is pretty much the definition of awesome evil bitch. :D Then watch the series finale in season 7, where he fights in the final battle against The First (the first evil) with the good guys, is beautifully, passionately, and selflessly in love with Buffy, and ends up sacrificing his life to save the world (and this doesn't even count season 5 of Angel when he comes back).

Then tell me about character development.

I think Nathan Scott is the character that CHANGED the most from the pilot-- and Cordelia Chase changed a lot from the pilot of BtVS... but I think characters like Brooke Davis, Spike, and Willow Rosenberg have had the most character development. Yes they have also changed over time, but more importantly- the writers developed these characters A LOT throughout their shows! Their characters have been elaborated on and expanded and have really evolved over time. There were dimensions brought to these characters that are so rare to find on television. Brooke Davis is one of those rare multi-level and multi-dimensional characters and the writers of the show really dove into her character development through the series.

Angel's character was developed a lot over time--- he didn't really change so drastically, but his character was definitely developed a lot since he had to become the main character of his own series.
