let's say that Sam stayed dead and Jake was the chosen one..i doubt she'd have shown up and worked her charms on him to keep him in line (assuming it was required)..if it had been Ava do you think she wouldn't have shown up (as herself or in a male body) and manipulated her as well?
i have zero doubt that she'd have played her game with anyone in Sam's shoes who needed the right kind of pushing and he was just a means to an end..if she had backed out at the last minute and sacrificed her life to undo the harm she caused them maybe you'd have a case..but she was a willing part of the plan all along and never regretted her actions and even gloated more than a bit when it all came to light..she might not have been as "in your face" as the other demons but the enemy who befriends you and gets close so they can slide the knife in deeper are worse than the ones who snarl and are upfront about their nature all along..

I don't think Ruby ever truly cared for Sam. She was just this master manipulator who played her part brilliantly.

She was always a lying whorebag :D even moreso in S4. her 'nice' act may have fooled Sam [who lets face it .. can be a big moron] but it didn't fool 98% of us fans! ;D

fanfly picked Yes because she introduced the concept that demons were once human:
I had to add a different option because although I think she introduced a gray area I don't think she really loved Sam. Although I think she had a kind of twisted affection for him- but not enough to subvert her plans or even make her hesitate.

But although she was truly evil and committed to her plot and not really a gray area character[although she pretended to be]...she introduced the concept that demons were not all the same. That they were human once and potentially had different motivations for what they were doing. Whereas before she came along, the boys viewed demons as all the same and after the same thing. Although Ruby herself ended up being after the same thing as Azazel and Lilith, she introduced the concept that demons don't necessarily all have the same goal. Which is true.

I think when it was Katie Cassidy, she truly did want to help the boys... but then they changed to Gen & got such negative reactions about her, they flipped the script.

No not Ruby, but the demon in "Sin City" Casey (Sasha Barrese)- she actually seemed to become more human interacting with Dean.

acklesgirl87 picked no way..she was never a grey area character:
First of all, I definitely don't think there was any real love between Ruby and Sam. I wouldn't even say she held any affection for Sam. I think the only thing Ruby cared about was her goal, and her "affection" for him was just a reflection of the fact that she could play him as easily as Jimi Hendrix played the guitar.

In my opinion there is no grey area where demons are concerned. They may have been human once, they are so warped by whatever brutal torture they suffered in hell that whatever spark of humanity there may have been within them long been extinguished. Yes it's true that they may not have the same motivations or the same goals, ultimately whatever their motivations are, whatever they want to achieve, is self-serving and EVIL and there is no redeeming them.

sheepprncss3 picked maybe a little:
When her character was first introduced she seemed to redefine what is was to be "demon." However, in the end she proved to be no different. She had ulterior motives all along and was never half good or even a little good….and as far as "love" between Ruby and Sam, I agree with acklesgirl87 that was all lust and no affection on both parts, I think.

She could have been - she seemed that way when she was first introduced, to fans like me who fell for the act, anyway - but it turned out that she was just more manipulative and deceitful than the demons who'd appeared previously.
