In S07E12, Dean Finds out a way to mail Sam about his status. How did he find it out?!?

He identified the house they'd been staying in during the present time, and left the message behind a loose panel. He carved Sam's name onto the panel to catch Sam's attention and made sure it was in a place Sam would see when he laid down.
