E3 this 年 was kind of an atrocity. Bethesda had a huge mess with their audience, EA was EA, Ubisoft was publishing a game for the fucking WII in 2019, and no one cares about Microsoft. But Devolver does what they do best, be ultra violent and insane. Even if their としょうかん, ライブラリ of games wasn’t that big, they were all very impressive. A new horror game, a running battle royale, DLC for The Messenger, and a new trailer for my most anticipated game of the year, My Friend Pedro. So let’s talk about it.
My Friend Pedro follows an unnamed, masked man and his friend, a talking バナナ named Pedro, waking up in a warehouse with only one goal in mind. To find and kill an entire family of criminals that range from serial killers, assassins and corrupt businessmen. With his help, あなた can roll, jump, and shoot with the best of them all in this gritty, over the top, wacky game. Yeah, the weirdest part about My Friend Pedro is that it has もっと見る of a sense of humor than say Hotline Miami. I was expecting yet another gritty action game, not that I was complaining, but instead, it’s a tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top game with a ton of jokes and nonsensical moments. That’s because My Friend Pedro was originally a flash game on the Adult Swim website… well that certainly explains the wacky humor. So the story isn’t important. No one bought My Friend Pedro for the story. They bought it for the crazy gun gameplay. And I 愛 it so much.
The game starts あなた out with a basic set of dual wield pistols. あなた can have one pistol, but why the hell would あなた want that. From there, あなた can collect shotguns, TMPs, assault rifles, and sniper rifles, and just go nuts from there. The game has slow down, typical in shooters nowadays, but あなた can shoot at anything to hit anyone. See a metal plate, shoot it to deflect and kill a goon. Ride a skateboard and kick it at a guy to stun him before shooting. The frying pan alone sold me on the gameplay. Just kick it up in the air and shoot at it, deflecting bullets all over the place to hit guys. But the best feature is the ability to aim at two guys at once. It’s a bit hard to master, but once あなた do, あなた feel like a champion as あなた are dodging bullets, firing away at enemies, watching as あなた hit two guys in the head at once. It’s the most satisfying thing in the world. The game also has a few platforming sequences, of course all while shooting. Jumping gaps, opening doors, using rope to スイング from one platform to another, riding a skateboard to go over ramps, it all moves so naturally.
Sadly, the environments leave much to be desired. Everywhere in the game is just grey warehouse, または grey abandoned building または grey sewer または grey office building. In a way, I can understand, since あなた aren’t really focusing on the background and are mostly focused on trying to hit enemies and get the best score, but at the same time, I can only take so much grey. And of course, once I made this complaint, it’s as if the game heard my prayers and brought a dream like sequence that is all colorful and crazy. These sections are very bizarre but fun at the same time as あなた kill not hired goons anymore, but haters of Pedro. The gravity is weird, and there’s a lot of auto jump platforms, all while あなた shoot at black figures with smiley faces… Did I mention this game is weird?
My Friend Pedro was a fun six 時 run and gun action game with some really tight shooting controls and some of the strangest story telling I’ve seen from a Devolver game thus far. Honestly, this game shouldn’t have been so fun what with the linear gameplay and bland level design, but it’s the gun combat that makes it so addictive and fun. I honestly want to see もっと見る from the small team that made this game, and see them do so much もっと見る than a flash game online. If あなた want an insanely fun game that makes あなた feel like a bargain bin John Wick, give My Friend Pedro a look.
