Terrible matchup suggested since Bayleef's move-set is terrible. Lv, Move-Set, stats, hold items and player intelligence affects who would win in the games. I've beat a Gyrados with a Golem once due to having a good move-set and hold item equipped. Meganuim with earthquake and a focus sash could beat a houndoom so again base-type match-ups aren't the absolute factor to battling.

also how was you bringing that up relevant here?

@LostOblivion, I've just time and time again type disadvantaged-Pokemon win out. Since Bayleef's move-set is terrible, how did it beat Houndoom? It seems to me that the Pokemon's skill and training is more important in the anime than anything else.

Type-Match ups still happen in the anime, Ash's 1st battle with Brock as an example. I only listed what affected the battles in the games, with the anime its:
PLOT
move-set
pokemon and trainer intelligence

feel free to add more if needed.

Not to mention Intuition/Fighting Spirit. Meaning, how willing is each combatant once they are ready to battle. Also, it means who is most willing to battle.

Most important episodes have the pokemon also wanting to win. and in this case they would want to win as it would be pointless otherwise

Especially fighting for a certain someone. For example, Grovyle battling against Tropius in a rematch to impress Meganium.

since this isn't the anime but a club about the anime we would expect them to be in character to win, no external interference

May barely beat Drew's Absol in the Grand Festival and she barely lost to Ash with his End of Region Pokemon. The difference here is too big for Maylene to win.
